What's your opinion of Dr. Phil? |
|
I am just curious how people think of him. There's times I think he is a conservative Christian -- then he said he was an agnostic. He seems fairminded to me, but there are other times he sounds like a fellow Texan -- George Bush. I personally think he's done a lot of good though. Any comments?

3. It strikes me as ironic |

that a fat SOB like him has a best selling book on dieting. It's like Rush penning a tome on self-control.

5. Some of his advice is really helpful |
|
Edited on Sat Nov-01-03 07:13 AM by La_Serpiente
I give him credit for one thing: he tries to understand the complexities of some issues. I think he tries to empower people to be independent and make their own choices. I think he tries to teach them how to put limits on themselves when it come to their behaviour - not their aspirations.
Yet sometimes, I don't think he can see past culture. He looks at his cases from a certain perspective - maybe that kind of Southern, Texas perspective. However, he could be applying that same case to someone from New York City who is unfamiliar with his ways. That's his fault.
However, he did make me mad one time. When the war broke out, many organizations went to the street to protest the war. There was also this feminist group called CODE PINK. He had two prominent organizers from that group on his show and he had a whole bunch of White (I don't mean to say this. It is just that his entire audience is only white really) and military people. One of the people in the audience was a major in the military also. He just gave him, and other members of military families, the microphone and they just lashed out at the two people form Code Pink on the stage. I thought it was unethical for him to do that. Dr. Phil also said that those people on stage were, well he didn't say this exactly, but he implied that they were hurting the soldiers when in actuality they wanted to bring them home.

9. He's more spiritually aware than Oprah. ;) |
|
And that ain't saying a whole lot, I guess. Oprah's turned into a thoroughly materialistic celebhuman.
My father gave me "dr" Phil's most recent book last xmas, and I sorta skimmed thru the beginning, because I have already learned that to be happy in life you have to do what you love to do. I thought we all learned that 30 years ago?
But for entertainment, Phil's ok I guess.

8. I think he is a conservative |
|
but reasonable, however I stopped watching after he had Media Benjamin on right as the IW started and basically told her she shouldn't be talking anti-war because it would demoralize the troops.
Some other things he did prior to that seemed a tad insensitive at times, but the war think made me tune out.

|
bits on his show....He shows little video clips of Dr. Phil saying things, like for instance, one was "I've had a vasectomy!"....The way he said it with his big, staring eyes it was very funny!

14. Letterman's a good sport |
|
He had Dr. Phil on his show as a guest and pretty much let him take a few good shots. The biggest laugh was at the Dr.'s expense when he made mention that Letterman thought Phil was too fat to author a diet book....the audience howled!
Ellen DeGeneres cracked me up yesterday on her Halloween show, she did her entire show made up like the "good" Dr. :D

I saw him a few times on Oprah and I thought he gave good advise. I personally try not to tell people what they should do or give advise, but I do state my opinion frequently.

The only thing he does that I like is to look the whining, rationalizing snivelers in the eye and say "So, how's that working for you?". That works on any level, and he did not invent that.
He's 6'4" and around 250 Lbs. and he's a "Diet Expert"? All the tables I've looked at consider him border-line obese. Hell, he's only got 35 pounds on me, and I'm almost "morbidly obese"....
Pop Psychology in it's present incarnation. Books, TV shows, web site, line of "diet" food...Life is Good for Dr. Phil.
He, Doc, How's that working for you???

23. Saw him on Oprah a few times |
|
Whenever he appeared on Oprah, I generally thought he tended to make some good points, helped some folks see things in a way they hadnt before. Ever since he's had his own show though, I've seen him become more and more abusive to his guests in a fairly obvious attempt to pander to the crowd. This from someone who doesn't have much opportunity to be home at that time of day, so the change in him is pretty apparent. Its probably no wonder he doesnt (or at least didn't) have a private practice. If I were paying him money to counsel me, and he spoke that way to me, I would probably smack him upside the head, walk out and refuse to pay, but thats just me.

29. He has a couple of good ideas, but bugs me. |
|
He's like an imitation of himself. He's a big annoying cartoon. But he does have a couple of good ideas. One is that whatever you do in life, you get some kind of pay-off for it. If you are frustrated about being stuck in a boring, low-paying job, there's a reason you stay stuck. If you didn't get something out of it, you wouldn't do it. The other good idea he often repeats is that if you want to change something in your life, you have to set up your life to support the changes. Mundane example: Leaving your work clothes at the gym, so that you have to go to the gym in the morning before work.
