Looking for a haven for liberals
I'm going to go nuts if I have to be surrounded by wingers much longer. Nominate your favorite cozy, comfy home for liberals. Conditions: must be in a state where it doesn't get too warm, e.g., New England or upper Mid-Atlantic, Pacific northwest, etc. Specific town names are welcome. Please tell me why you think it's a great place for me to regain my sanity.

1. actually, there are some strongholds in the South
I believe that Austin Texas is a pretty liberal city. Also San Francisco is probably the most liberal city in this nation.

I don't know any others.

4. No way I can do Texas!
Between the heat and the GW-type mentality, no can do! No offense to Texans who are liberals, but what little I know about the state rules it out for me.

I hear is nice.

Cambridge, MA I utterly adore and is more left wing than liberal. (I hear Amherst, MA is a liberal paradise too)

Then there's New York City. What a wonderful place.

20. Asheville is great
Great little liberal haven only an hour and a half from my home. Thought of moving there, still thinking about it actually.

I live in freeper heaven a.k.a. Spartanburg, SC. :puke:

7. Recent experiences with Chicago
Would indicate it's not too bad, either. Hubby and I have decided if he ever got an offer there, we'd go in a heartbeat. We live in SW Ohio (Freeperland), and I can definitely say the wingers don't determine the entirety of the political dialogue there like they do around here.

9. Chicago is good.
Rich Daley (the mayor) is a DINO from my viewpoint, but I am far left.

8. You may want to try
College town type Cities... aka Tallahassee, FL. The universities ini that city account for a significant portion of the population.

When I attended FSU it seemed to be somewhat of a liberal haven in the middle of conservative america.

10. Thanks to you and all who are responding ....
Have to reiterate, though, that my own personal weirdness dictates that I don't go anywhere that gets HOT!!! Can't do it!! I think it's physiological, because I'm really miserable in warm weather, and always have been. Don't mind cold, rain, or snow, though (go figure). Could it be that I'm a Buffalo native?

The colder the better! Vancouver sounds good, along with anything on the US/Canada border. Appreciate the responses.

14. A couple of ideas
I moved to VT not long ago and it's far more comfortable, politically, than where I was. It's also beautiful. Downside: there's not much money to be found, or made, here.
Wisconsin always makes me think of Tommy Thompson. Sorry, cheeseheads.
Vancouver, on the other hand, is a magnificent place. Of course it has its problems, but if you can get into Canada, my advice is to do it, don't think twice, put the wheels in motion. Van is an amazing city. Also, Canada Immigration last month lowered the points threshold for skilled workers from 75 to 67, making it easier to qualify. Google "Canada immigration attorney" and you'll find a lot of Canadian legal firms that specialize in this. The one catch: they prefer you to be able to bring CD$9400 with you for getting settled in (about US$7100).

18. Madison Wisconsin is great.
I've lived all over the country. I currently live in my hometown of Chicago, or nearby anyway.

But someday, meaning when the last of our two boys moves out, we're seriously considering moving to Madison. It's just the right size, and is a thriving place. Plus of course, it's a college town.

Whitewater Wisconsin is really nice too. It's also a college town. If you draw a triangle from Madison to Milwaukee to Chicago, Whitewater is right in the middle.

19. Right here in Joisey.
There's a bunch of wingnuts here and there, but most places tend to spank them. Makes life interesting.

Can get pretty warm for a couple of weeks in the summer, though.
