you couldn't even hint that Jethro was gay. Had to keep it an inside joke and make him look just stupid. Plausible deniability, and all.

the culture was such in the early 1960s that a "career woman" like Miss Hathaway was by implication gay or if not, then in a continual state of horniness in direct conflict with the sensibility that made her a career woman in the first place.

You couldn't be both back then, although there was a phrase, "man-hungry" that referred to this, although somewhat obliquely. It was generally accepted back then that sex before marriage was only used for "trapping" purposes; ie if you had sex with someone you were duty bound to marry them. Hence the desperate ("I'm over 30 and not married")undertones given to Miss Hathaway's pursuit and lust for Jethro.

damn, who knew the Hillbillies were that deep? As an aside, I totally missed the broad humor of this show and found it extremely annoying when it was on. It was only later that I saw it again with the right cultural "distance" and appreciated the humor.
