Where should a lonely homo go tonight (I RSVP'd too late for the co-worker's halloween party  )?

Coffee house that gay people flock to, whose car park is always full, and there's no street parking available: 33 miles away

Typical Gay bar: 20 miles away

Another gay bar, only bigger: 33 miles away

Nondiscerning coffeeshop in bookstore that attracts more heteros and hetero families and might have the new Mandrake Linux 9.2 distro for purchase: 15 miles away

Also need to go to hardware store to pick up a black light bulb, but that can wait. I need to become social!

Thanks y'all!

1. Go to the
well, are you looking for someone to pick up? Go to the bar.

If you are not interested in anyone, then go to the hetero coffer place and read a book or something.

2. sit at home on DU and play with us!
And why the move to mandrake? I thought you were a dedicated SUSE person...

I'm currently, um, "obtaining" the isos for suse9, since the ftp install is still 8.2. And with a little luck, a newer version of vmware with which to run windoze inside my shiny new suse setup. Wish me luck. Then go out and have a gay old time. ;-)

3. I love SuSE, but Mandrake 9.2 comes with Gnome 2.4.0...
And I asked SuSE when they'd make a downloadable Gnome 2.4 for SuSE Linux 8.2 or 9 (they currently have 2.2 downloads for 7.x-8.1). They basically said that I could download Gnome from Gnome's main site but they wouldn't guarantee compatibility, that SuSE comes out with new releases every 6 months (which I know as I've been SuSE from v6), and that it is unlikely that Gnome for SuSE would be updated anytime soon. :-(

And I liked what Gnome 2.4 has to offer...

Also consider that KDE 3.1.4 is NEWER than Gnome 2.4.0 by about two weeks and it got into SuSE 9. Gnome in SuSE 9 is still at 2.2.0 (or was it 2.2.2?)

I hate to be fickle, and I also read that SuSE 9.0 is more of a point release than a new version (which was what I thought when I first read its improvements, it's not worthy of a x.0 number... I think SuSE wants to play catchup to Red Hat and Mandrake, even though one won't be doing boxed distros anymore and the other might not have any releases after 9.2 because they declared bankruptcy some time ago... :-( .) Heck, I might stick with 8.2 and wait for 9.1 anyway, by which time Gnome 2.4 might be included.

If I had a cable modem, I'd obtain ISOs too. :-)

Good luck on the install! I might whine about SuSE's bad points, but it is a GOOD distro and it is gaining in popularity, especially in Europe where it's already on solid ground.

6. I guess I understand
but I'm a KDE fan. Gnome feels dirty and wrong to me. And if I'm running vmware, I'll use blackbox or fluxbox instead of any of the bloated eye candy environments.

I've got nothing against Mandrake. Learned linux from 'em. Then tried gentoo, and figured out real quick that I hadn't learned enough linux for that (got no love from the x-configuration nightmare). Debian worked well for me, too, but the stable release is now sorely outdated. Will try the new suse, and probably end up back in mandrakeland, myself, before too long. Ho hum.

11. Watch The CD
Edited on Sat Nov-01-03 09:30 PM by Don_G
Mandrake 9.2 burns the CD ROM/Burner out for reasons yet unexplained.

Choose your source of news for that info: http://www.dailyrotation.com/
