I'm so very sad. My Weimy either killed or attacked and scared off... |
|
my Kelso stag (game cock). I went to feed them awhile ago, and I noticed a Bisbee-size whole under the chickenwire, where he had bored his way into the pen. He injured the Kelso hen--but she looks like she's going to be ok...and he either carried off and killed my Kelso stag or the stag escaped through the hole in the cage.
I rescued these birds from a guy who gamed them. I loved them, even though the stag was a mean guy. I've looked EVERYWHERE and I can't find him.
I put Bisbee on the chain, where he will stay either until the stag returns or I locate the body. Bisbee has a radio collar, so he couldn't have carried him far, and I've looked everywhere within his range. I'm praying that the stag was scared away. If that's the case, he will return to his hen.
Yes, I know that weimies are bird dogs. But Bisbee's range only allowed him to get to the front of the cage. Stupid me...that's were he bored into their cage.
I'm so upset. This is the dog that pulled me out of the creek when I had a go-cart wreck a couple of years ago. He lied down on top of me to keep me warm and from going into shock. He licked my face until the medics arrived an hour after the wreck. He saved my life.
Now it appears that he's taken the life of my favorite rooster.
I don't blame him....I know it's his nature and I perhaps should have built the cage further away from the house.
I want to sell all of my birds now. This has saddened me so.

Of all the birds I have, he was my very favorite. And a fertile little devil, too, as he fathered 12 babies that hatched a couple of months ago. And my kelso hen just started laying again.

5. Said a little prayer to St. Francis too. |
|
O8) And to St. Anthony, patron saint of lost things.
"Tony, Tony look around, somethings lost and can't be found." It's always worked for me.

Sorry to hear that. Maybe he will be back. That's the downer of having critters, we usually outlive them.

Looks like my trip is cancelled.
I was going to go back to Neshoba to hear the Klansman's lawyer argue his appeal tomorrow.

4. Sounds like you've got a runaway bird. Hope that's the case |
|
If you've searched your dog's range, it sounds like the bird is loose somewhere, probably afraid to come back to where the dog is.
Good look. I've had pets kill other pets before. Not a pleasant thing to go through. My heart goes out to you and your (hopefully just) missing rooster.

8. I found no feathers at all. |
|
Just one small tail feather by the hole, which the roo could have pulled out when he went out of the hole.
Bisbee killed a turkey (wild turkey) last fall. There were feathers EVERYWHERE--even on the front porch...I think he brought some of the feathers to me as a present. At any rate, it was a huge mess and the evidence was everywhere. Not the case this time.
Thanks for making me feel better.

10. That's a good sign !!! |
|
I didn't even think of that. If Bisbee killed the roo, there'd be signs of it everywhere. You might make that trip after all !

16. I'm going to go outside at 5AM, when he usually crows, and look for him. |
|
I should be able to hear him if he's within 10 acres of me.

14. He hates coming inside. I can't even drag him inside. |
|
Since he's been in our family, he's come inside twice. He hates it in here.

13. They're bird dogs but they don't usually kill |
|
the instinct is to pick up and bring back and they usually have very soft mouths. Check his mouth for peck marks. A stag like that wouldn't go down without getting at least one good lick.

15. I did check him all over. He has no injuries at all. |
|
And, like I said, the stag is a really mean guy. I'm the only person who can go in the pen and not be attacked.

17. That and the lack of any other signs of a kill |
|
are really good.
However, if he got loose and you have coyotes, eagles or large owls around you, it might be a different story. But I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that he comes staggering in after a late night of boozing and poker with the boys. :hide:

And hawks. :scared:
I'm going to keep my fingers crossed that he's roosting high up in a tree and will come home tomorrow. :(

Don't sell all your birdies, silly! You know you don't want to do that
Double check your Kelso hen is okay - she may need to go to the vet and is more injured than she appears. Definitely keep an eye out for the stag, and keep hunting for him. He may be injured and need you to find him - I'm hoping he didn't go off somewhere to die :(
Keep your head up. If you rescued these guys, you're a good person. Your dog I'm sure didn't know what he was doing was wrong, it was just an unfortunate thing. Double check your hen and make sure she is really ok and doesn't need a check-up, and keep looking for your stag.
Chin up! It will all be okay, I promise :)
