Breakfast: what do you eat?
I stopped eating eggs and bacon long ago, but now I'm sick of cereal, toast, etc. Besides, all those carbs are fattening. But what to eat?

6. mix it up
I'll eat the same cereal for a couple of years, then it's like I'm dead from boredom and have to switch.

Just found a new brand, and it should be good for controlling cholesterol too, because of the oats.

Barbara's Shredded Oats - Vanilla Almond

They're little textured oat things, crunchy, don't get soggy quickly at all. Verrrry tasty. Health food stores have 'em, cheaper there, but my Kroger's has 'em too.

I put one bite on my dog's cereal, and he loves em too.

When enough fruit is in season, I make a big bowl of 5 kinds of cut-up fruit together, top it with some almonds or pecans. Banana, apple, pear, kiwi. I get some fruit frozen, keep it in the freezer. I'm no good at cutting up pineapple -- it ends up all over the kitchen, so I just buy it in the little cans. Some people like yogurt on top, or Grape-Nuts for a little crunch.

For a little tasty protein, eggs are fine -- they took a bum health rap a while back. For most people, though, an average of one egg a day is fine.

I also like the little bitty cocktail sausages, Lil Smokies, all beef. They're already cooked, throw 'em in a pan or heat up in the microwave for about 18 seconds. Cut a couple up and throw 'em in scrambled eggs.

7. Cheerios with a sliced banana and skim milk
Edited on Sun Nov-02-03 02:16 PM by nuxvomica
In colder weather, I'll eat a big bowl of oatmeal with a sliced banana mixed in.
Every once in a while I'll have eggs over easy on toast with 6 or 7 strips of Oscar's hickory-smoked bacon. Once you've eaten Oscar's you'll never touch the nitrosamine-laden name-brand crap they sell supermarkets.
BTW, I just checked and you can get Oscar's bacon shipped to you. Here's the link: http://www.oscarssmokedmeats.com/bacon.htm

13. whatever i feel like eating
Carbs can't be all that fattening, as no one has ever accused me of being fat and I eat tons of them. But perhaps since I'm an older model and was not brainwashed to believe that carbs can make you fat, my body/mind doesn't respond to modern programming, for younger people certainly do often report this strange reaction to carbs. I wonder if meditating on the Sophia Loren mantra ("everything you see I owe to pasta") would have any affect on this?

In any case,
I was raised on eggs, bacon, toast, and still feel this is the best if you need a meal that will carry you for many hours. If I just need something light, poached eggs on toast is quick and cheap. I don't like cold cereal much because it seems addictive. I can easily eat a whole box. But I like oatmeal, cream of wheat or cream of rice, or grits. Quite often I have leftovers such as pasta for breakfast -- most tomato based pasta sauces actually taste better the next day because the flavors have more time to blend. I used to just eat raw fruit in the morning a la Tony Robbins but it is too expensive to do that anymore and, in any case, I got sick of being hungry again by 10 A.M.

All that 1970s hysteria about bacon and eggs being bad has been disproved, you know. The bad stuff was the fake "trans" fat. If you were into natural foods and simply continued to use butter, eschewing all invented fats, you never would have had a problem, and you'd have eaten better to. Like the lady said, "I trust the cows more than the chemists." I never lost my nerve and never surrendered my butter through all the decades of naysaying, and now I am so-so-smug about it, I'm afraid.

Until recently, a friend was supplying me with fresh, free range chicken eggs. The yolks were orange with vitamin-y goodness.

So I'd say break down and enjoy some eggs. With real butter. The price of butter will keep you from abusing this precious substance.

*Wick Fowler's Two Alarm Chili

In 1967, Wick Fowler defended the honor of Texas-style chili at the first championship chili cookoff, using the same recipe that goes into this 2-Alarm Chili Kit. Seasoned chili fans appreciate the full warmth of his recipe.

Wick Fowler's 2-Alarm Chili Kit consists of seven individual packets allowing you to season to taste two pounds of ground beef, turkey, chicken or wild game. The all natural, premium spices and seasonings will help you make the best Texas chili north of the Rio Grande.

Edited on Sun Nov-02-03 07:56 PM by MaineDem
Most days I have Kashi Go Lean Crunch cereal with a chopped up granny smith apple and skim milk.

Other days I'll have a boca burger, an ounce of cheddar cheese (yes, I weigh it), and a light english muffin.

Or an egg white omelet with tons of choppped veggies and a light english muffin.

On my no cereal/bread days, I have chopped apple and low-fat plain yogurt with cinnamon and equal.

Instead of butter I use the I Can't Believe it's Not Butter spray.

24. Fruit! Lots of fruit.
Grapes and melon and an apple and orange juice and a slice of banana bread. I think I eat pretty well considering I'm in college and everyone around me eats sausages and donuts for breakfast. The sauseges are swimming in grease and i don't eat meat anyway. But the donuts, man the temptation to eat those is huge. They're REALLY good.

34. Oatmeal and raisins almost every morning--I am a vegetarian & a cheapskate
The dog even gets a dollop of warm oatmeal and she loves it. I don't give her any of the raisins, though, you don't want to give a critter with bad kidneys grapes or raisins.

Oatmeal has lots of protein, I understand.

26. Country ham, cheese grits, scrambled eggs, and tomatoes ...
Edited on Sun Nov-02-03 09:23 PM by DemoTex
With a couple of buttered English muffins and orange marmalade. Mango juice, a strong French roast coffee and cold, clear well water. Actually, that seldom happens. But it is my favorite breakfast and it is what I enjoy cooking for company here at the mountain house.

I like to pre-soak the country ham (de-salinization, I guess). I like fresh tomatoes from my garden. To the eggs I add a pinch of marjorum and a splash of milk (or half&half, or soy milk).

The grits can be anything from stone ground at the local mill to "quick" grits (15 minute cook time), but never instant grits. To a 4-serving recipe for grits I add 1-cup of grated sharp cheddar and 1-cup of grated or shredded Parmesean.

I grind the coffee beans and make the coffee with cold mountain well water. I offer half&half and amber La Perruche sugar cubes for those who like their coffee "regular."

A special breakfast for special times.

31. Eggs
I just started South Beach. According to the author, you're better off having the eggs. Have Canadian Bacon instead of the other kind. Lay off the cereal and toast (unless you have whole grain, high-fiber stuff). No fruit for breakfast... not even juice. It messes w/ your glycemic index.

Non-fat yogurt is ok. I buy it plain and add vanilla extract and sugar-free sweetner.

Today I had two slices of black forest ham, and rolled up in each of them was a hard-boiled egg, and a cup of coffee w/ just a touch of cream in it.

I'm still pretty full.
