Baby names you hate?
Caveat: Anyone who is expecting a child, DON'T READ THIS THREAD. Your favorite name is likely to appear, and, hey, to quote Rick Nelson, you can't please everyone, so, you've got to please yourself, and boy, does that hold true with baby names.

Also, I apologize in advance to anyone whose own name appears on this list.

Anyway, I've got to go with Brittany and Tiffany at the top of my list of hated names.

It's pretentious, and always given to some white kid. Cody seems to go hand-in-hand with it, for some reason.

Hyphens and Inventions
Any pop-celebrity knock-off name (minus two points for hyphenations), or any wild made-up name. I also can't fathom respelling a common name based on loose phonetic rules instead of common spellings. Parents, please remember: your kids will one day have to put this name on a resume and college applications. "Unique" does them no favors.

44. There were quite a few girls named "China" and "India" (and
even one "Burma" that I can remember reading about) during the 19th century, in England especially I think. I wonder if anyone has thought of compiling comments of how they felt about their names--if such comments exist. (And there's an American writer named Jamaica, come to think of it) I don't especially mind these names, but I wonder if the possessors met with grief over them. AND, of course, there's the colonial overtone in most cases.

I wonder why more people don't use names from grandparents and other family-traditional names. Faddish names can go sour. My sister hates her name--"Bonnie", and swears that almost everyone with that name is about the same age, so it also dates one....

I can't think of any specific names (besides those already mentioned, like Brandy) that I hate--but I cringe when I hear any of the names that sound as if Hollywood or the music industry thought them up, and are too, too cute. I also think parents shouldn't give kids nicknames as their legal names. For example, "Libby" is fine, but there's the option of dignity in the full name "Elizabeth" should the grown-up child wish to use it.

9. Shaquiffa
Seriously...pronounced: Shah - qui - fah

I asked the Mom who named her daughter 'Shaquiffa' as to it's meaning and she said: "I don't know...I just made it up & I think it sounds pretty."

The lesson: Some parents enjoy being cruel to their kids.

(Long story. Friend of a friend of a friend.) I drove up and thought "Oh, this is a nice cluster of three houses." Then I realized they were all connected. Jesus. What excess. It figures he'd saddle his kids with names like that.

I met a well-connected Repub last week (another sorta friend of a friend) and one kid is "Colt."

45. I hate to see
girls with boys' names. So many names that used to be male names have become female names over the years: Shirley, Beverly, Leslie, Kim, Terry, even Vivian and Carol. This isn't a new trend. My church choir includes a middle-aged woman who has a very masculine first name. I thought I hadn't heard right when she first introduced herself.

But I still cringe when I hear of girls named Taylor, Tyler, Schuyler, Avery, Bailey, Shelby, Madison, or even, Lord help us, Jackson.

The poor guys aren't going to have any names left.

In the area of male names, I like some of the trendy ones that have a history, such as Jeremy, Justin, and Caleb, but I can't stand "Hunter" or "Harley."

By the way, while I was "church shopping" on my exploratory trip to Minneapolis, I happened to attend one that was holding a baptismal service. The son of one of the priests was being baptized "Coleman"--in Minnesota yet. I just about heaved when I heard that, and for that and several other reasons, crossed that church off my list.

I personally don't care for all the Heathers and many versions of Katherine/Katie/Cathryn/Katelyn I run into these days.

Parents, please don't give your kid a name that s/he will have to spell everytime s/he goes to a reception, buys a product, makes a phone call, etc., especially if your last name also must be spelled!

And anything that is or rhymes with Bailey or Aidan. In addition to the hugely popular Braden and Kaden, I have seen Daeden, Shayden and Zayden. It has got to stop.

66. how about "Pikachu?"
There was actually a teen-ager in my town who named her son "Pikachu" a few years ago when Pokemon was ultra-popular.

67. Tiana
And any other made-up, ethnic sounding stuff.

I like old-fashioned names. I think they are even nicer next to all the new-fangled fad names that people are coming up with these days. There are so many people trying to be original that they all sound the same. John, Michael, Carol and Barbara are unusual these days.

69. I'm waiting for the Basque name fad
Edited on Mon Nov-03-03 12:11 PM by BareKnuckledLiberal
I've been learning Euskara off-and-on since the summer. I have a couple of friends who speak it, one who teaches it, and had a college girlfriend whose ancestry went back to Zuberoa (Soule) in France.

Here's a sampling of the kinds of names that just the little girls are given in Euskal Herria (Basque Country). I also picked from the most unfamiliar of the lot, but any of them blow Tiffany and Madison away.

Agurtzane ("Adoration")
Argiñe (Lucy)
Atsegiñe ("Consolation"; Consuelo)
Bakarne (Irene; "Peace")
Bihotz ("Heart"; Corazón, Cory)
Bitxilore (Margaret; Daisy; literally "Gem-Flower")
Ederne (Linda; Bella; "Beautiful")
Edurne ("Snow" -- a popular name for Basque girls)
Elurra ("Snowy" -- variant of Edurne)
Eguzkiñe ("Sunny"; Marisol)
Eskarne (Mercedes; Mercy; "Sympathy")
Fruitutsu ("Fruitful")
Garaitz (Victoria, Vicky; "Victory")
Gaxuxa (Grace; "Gracious")
Goikoana ("Heavenly"; "Within Heaven")
Goizargi (Dawn; "Daybreak")
Gotzone (Angela; "Angel" -- a very popular name)
Haize (Windy; "Wind")
Hegazti ("Bird")
Idoia ("Marsh"; name of singer of Mocedades hit song Eres Tú)
Igotz ("Ascension")
Itxaro (Hope)
Koldobike (Louise)
Lore (Flower; many combination names; possible source of common modern name Laura)
Maite ("Love"; Amy, Darlene, Darling, Amanda, Pet, Lovey)
(There are nearly 20 variants for Maite, including Mayte, Prince's first wife's name)
Nahikari ("Desire"; Desiree)
Oianko (Sylvia; "Woods")
Otsana ("She-Wolf")
Panpoxa (Linda, Bella, Grace; "Beautiful" or "Graceful")
Pozne (Joy, Felicia, Hillary; "Happiness")
Udaberri ("Springtime")
Urretxa (Hazel; "Hazel tree")
Zabal (Sharon (?); "Generous" or "Plain")
Zandua (Virginia; "Virgin")
Zuriñe (Jennifer, Blanche; "White")
Zuzene (Justine; "Just"; "Correct")

(Pronunciation guide: X="sh", Z="s", S=halfway between "s" and "sh", J="zh" (usually), Ñ="ny" like in Spanish, vowels like in Spanish or Italian.)

There's also a lot of Basque names that are more conventionally beautiful (to the American ear). The biggest list I have found is at http://www.buber.net/Basque/Euskara/emakume.html (women's names) and http://www.buber.net/Basque/Euskara/gizon.html (men's names).

By the way, the Basque "Autonomous Community" (three provinces in Spain) is close to declaring independence. Check out www.berria.INFO for the latest news.

78. Tryptich
I swear I was driving cross-county and looked at a missing children poster at a rest stop in Ohio and one of the kids was called Tryptich. And they wonder why she ran away?

Most of the trends I strongly oppose have already been discussed. I also hate the overserious names given to what seems like all my neighbors' kids. Christopher, Jonathan, Michael, Elizabeth, etc. Fifty years ago there were Bobbys, Chrises, Mikes, Bettys- what happened to nicknames? Is it part of the general trend of taking kids too seriously and teaching them to take themselves too seriously?
