DU musical gurus: Anyone have any suggestions for angry political rock?
I will admit that I'm a musical moron. I recently "discovered" Rage Against the Machine (I know, where have I been.) and "Township Rebellion" and "Renegades of Funk" are among my new faves.

I guess I've just been feeling quite angry and raw lately so I'm looking to broaden my musical horizons. What would you recommend for a cathartic release?

Remember, angry AND political. Thanks!

3. Godspeed You Black Emperor!
There are no vocals, and yet Godspeed, a collective from Canada, puts out some of the most politically moving post-rock ever written in twenty minute epic crescendos.

Start with 'East Hastings' and then try anything off Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennae to Heaven or Yanqui U.X.O.

Folk/Rock but he seeths with righteous anger. If he wrote nothing other than "If I had a rocket launcher" he would still be one of the greatest out there. I can't think of anyone else who ever wrote a song about the IMF before either.

58. System of a Down is great stuff
Radiohead: "It's just business/ Cattle prods and the IMF/ I trust I can rely on your vote" -- from Electioneering.

System of a Down is solid.

A Perfect Circle takes a surprisingly strong liberal political stance (see "Pet", "The Noose" off of their latest CD).

I bought a couple of CDs by Sage Francis, who is a pretty good hip-hop artist (and I don't listen to hip-hop normally) from Amazon yesterday -- I can't wait for those to get here.

Of course, there's Audioslave, which consists of the members of Rage Against the Machine, but with Chris Cornell of Soundgarden at the helm rather than Zack de la Rocha; it's a major shift musically, a bit of a shift lyrically, but it's still very political, and very powerful.

23. The Minutemen.
D. Boon was possibly the best political lyricist since Dylan, and he was an angry mofo. Check out "Vietnam," "This Ain't No Picnic," "Working Men are Pissed," "Felt Like a Gringo," "History Lesson," "Political Song for Michael Jackson to Sing," "Courage, "The Price of Paradise,"etc. etc.

Plus some more....
The Liars are a new band from New York who had a cool, pissed off political song on their last album called "Grown Men Don't Fall in the River Just Like That."

Gang of Four
The Pop Group
Manic Street Preachers have had some great angry anti-corporate songs in the past.
The Jam: "Funeral Pyre," "Going Underground," "Just Who is the 5 O'clock Hero?" "The Great Depression," "Bricks and Mortar," "Pretty Green," "In the City," "Scraping Away," I could go on, just go and get all their albums!

There was also a supposedly amazing British band in the late 60's called Third World War who apparently were angry communists who rocked like the MC5 and shaved their heads long befor punk rock. I've never been able to find any of their albums, though....

Oh, and also the New Bomb Turks...especially the tune "Grounded Ex-Patriot" off of the "Drunk on Cock" EP. I'd be a dick if I didn't mention this fine rock band...

72. ah yes, I second the vote for the Minutemen
great politics, excellent musicianship and, for a three-piece band, mind-bogglingly diverse.

Start with Double Nickles on the Dime; after you've picked your jaw up off the floor, explore some of their earlier stuff (there was a good compilation of their earlier stuff called My First Bells a number of years ago. DOn't know if it's still available, though.

36. AF is pretty right wing if they are anything....
I love that band but don't take them too seriously from a political perspective. I know the excuse that their most RW album (Cause For Alarm) was written lyrically by Pete Steele from Carnivore and Type O Negative. But still based on a lot of interviews and on-stage banter I would say they are a definite right wing band, although not the nazzis they often got accused of being.

I've read interviews as well where they espouse some pretty conservative viewpoints. I dont think anything more offensive than what I hear at the dinner table with old school new york italian liberal or left wing angry political rock.

But if you remember the 80's they were always accused of being nazis, as was any band or artist who espoused anything other than a left wing party line.

Boysetsfire

Get both After the Eulogy and Tommorw Come Today. Both are filled with angry, intelligent, and vital politically charged songs.

Really, really good stuff.

Other newer acts I would check out would include Anti-Flag (any of their stuff) and System of a Down.

For older stuff, check out the MC5 (the originals), the Dead Kennedy's, Black Flag, NOFX, Bad Religion (best lyrics), Propaghandi, Avail, Downset, Earth Crisis (alittle heavy handed, but definetly angry), older KMFDM, and Public Enemy (best hip-hop/rap group ever).

70. Sandinista--
London Calling may well be the greatest Rock album made, but I think Sandinsta is when they reached their political apogee.

Consider--

First the material-- Washington Bullets (Nicaragua), Police on My Back, Someone Got Murdered, The Call-Up (concerning joining a war), etc...

Then you have the fact that they insisted that this be a three record set and it was sold at a 2 album price.

The Clash are the KINGS of political rock (we miss you Joe)

76. the critics made such a balleyhoo over Springsteen's double album
The Clash released the greatest double album of all time, London Calling. Then Springsteen came out with a double album that the press and the promoters slathered praise over shamefully: "Bruce is such a talent that it takes two discs to contain all of his genius" (Nebraska or the River (?)). So the Clash, who were also on Columbia Records, decided to one-up the Boss by releasing a triple album--that will show them!

Sides 5 and 6 are pretty lame, I admit. I only listened to them a few times because I had taped the whole album. They sound like they were thrown together in a big hurry.

Rock and Roll lore, gotta love it.

also early Chumbawamba (Never Mind The Ballots or Pictures of Starving Children Sell Records).I know people think they're a one hit wonder but their early stuff is absolutely incredible.

and The Ex.

Here's a sample of Chumbawamba's lyrics. After reading the mysogeny thread I think you'll appreciate this one.

Ah-men

A visionary pause in the cycle
When she refused to buy or sell
When the daughters of perfect wives
Said there must be more than sacrifice
Needed more than symbolic change
More than silent wasting away
In factories and sterile marriages
He was God, she was powerless
With a brick for every year of life
She set out for the house of lies
The old boys' club under siege
His lordship cowered under his seat
Called for brandy and reinforcements
Blasted away at every movement
Close to breaking down the door
Past thick blue line and stupid laws
Black Friday left her bruised and stubborn
One brick from winning the struggle
Rapunzel hacked at the ivory tower
Asquith quickly rose to the hour
Appealed to patriotism, oily smiles
Gave nothing, called it compromise
Gauging the situation perfectly
Said ladies, ladies, listen to me
Nineteen fourteen, we're on the brink of war
Pick up a flag, drop your cause
Your targets are counter-revolutionary
Take my hand in democracy
Here's a piece of paper
You're officially free
Here's a list of instructions
For you to obey
And here's sharp knife
To cut your own throat
Small sacrifice in return for a vote
Whispered word in Pankhurst's ear
Visions of the first woman peer
Led women down the garden path
And into the arms of the enemy
Jail and force-feeding, waster martyrdom
Sold her songs for the national anthem
Slotted the smile back neatly into place
Served refreshments
At the end of the race
All demands reduced to a joke
X marks the plague, abandon hope
Butlers still pouring brandy for the rich
Excuse me pass me the privilege
A woman's voice, the state's idea
Same vested interests, same dirty deals
Currie and Williams immersed in the times
Examples to keep the rest in line
Currie and Williams two of a kind
Examples to keep the rest in line
Absolute power
Absolute power
Ladies, ladies, listen to me

OK, so they're rap, and not rock. It's angry and political. :D

74. Most of the songs in the late sixties were very political.
There was Joan Baez, Bob Dillon and so many more that I can't remember.

Creedence Clearwater Revival were quite political & are one of those few bands who were so political who got consistent airplay. hendrix did also, but not his political stuff.
