4. You are?
I am, too! A Militant Lesbian Feminist, actually, in the proud tradition of NSMA (but bigger, far hairier, and still a mere novice apprenticing in her storied shadow).

My only concern is that...uh...well...does this now mean that you have entered my universe of potential partners? :o

Perhaps this male lesbian thing has consequences that I didn't consider at the outset...

Actually, I just recently re-watched Murder at 1600 in which you not only get to see Dennis Miller being shot (no, I didn't replay it constantly, though I did think of DU at that moment) but get to see Alan Alda as an evil warmongering facist. Crazy, baby, crazy!

13. Hi, DemmieGal!
(and I mean 'gal' in the most liberated way possible)

Welcome to DU! We're all feminists in here. Well, most of us. Really, given that equality for women would seem to be a Democratic ideal, perhaps the rest of us just don't yet realize our feminism. Or perhaps they're merely temporarily confused as to what the heck a feminist is, as I was until altruistic DUers brought me to the light again.

I hope you enjoy the ride here. It's a magical mystery tour of the best kind.

I realized a long time ago I was a feminist...however, there are so many woman my age that take their rights for granted. Very, very sad to see so many conservative women that use women like Anne Coulter as a role model.

I think it might be just fashion; however, it is disheartening. I have been reading DU for a long time, btw-

Well, so much for my attempt to pretty it up. :D

Yes, Anne Coulter and the like are hardly positive role models. I think that even Barbie was more likely to (if not actually burn her bra) act as a better role model in that I know a lot of well-adjusted, independent women who grew up with Barbie dolls but I seriously doubt that the same qualities would be embodied by women who buy what people like Coulter and 'Dr Laura' are shoveling.

24. If you Googled my name
you could find my work scattered around the Net.

I took my screen name from Orwell's 1984. This passage in particular:

If there was hope, it must lie in the proles, because only there in those swarming disregarded masses, 85 per cent of the population of Oceania, could the force to destroy the Party ever be generated. The Party could not be overthrown from within. Its enemies, if it had any enemies, had no way of coming together or even of identifying one another. Even if the legendary Brotherhood existed, as just possibly it might, it was inconceivable that its members could ever assemble in larger numbers than twos and threes. Rebellion meant a look in the eyes, an inflexion of the voice, at the most, an occasional whispered word. But the proles, if only they could somehow become conscious of their own strength, would have no need to conspire. They needed only to rise up and shake themselves like a horse shaking off flies. If they chose they could blow the Party to pieces tomorrow morning. Surely sooner or later it must occur to them to do it? And yet-!

We've been having some gender issues around here and hashed some things in this thread. Then FG made his bold announcement in the Lounge.

21. Hey!
I was always a feminist. :P

I just wasn't sure about it. I mean, I was always curious but I figured "nah, not me. I just don't see myself ever being...you know...a feminist." But I can't deny that, whenever I heard of the latest assult on women's rights, I'd feel a stirring deep within. And then one day - today - my eyes were opened by persons of the same persuasion who convinced me of the nature of my true self. It was like a weight was lifted as I left that closet and boldly proclaimed my feminist nature.

Thanks for the breakthrough. :D

31. define "feminist"
Thelma and Louise? Bah. How many times have you read "Herland"?
Do you buy a 52 famous women desk calendar every year? I used to try to sell one every year, but I remember one year I donated it to the head of the local domestic abuse association. I never saw Vida Dutton Scudder or Emily Greene Balch in it. Can you tell me who they were, without googling? Do you ever buy gas from Kum and Go?

Those are my credentials. If I cannot join this club I will have to join GROSS. That is a cool club because it has a tiger in it.

57. like most men
I will support whatever my wife/girlfriend tells me to support, but what does that mean in practice?

If I need to support equality does that mean that I should insist that I have my way SOME of the time?

A moot point since I have better odds of winning the powerball than I do of winning the love lottery.

So what is left? Do I get a bumpersticker or a yard sign that says "support our women"? Do I have to toe the party line on the equal pay issue and join in complaints about the hot, hot sun when all I see is soft moonlight? You are right, dear, 'tis the sun.

On another issue, I think I see two strains of feminism, let's say a capitalist strain and a socialist strain. As an example, in the sociology course I took they showed a movie about the different ways boys and girls were raised. Boys were encouraged to be aggressive and competitive. Girls were encouraged to be co-operative and nurturing. I think there are some feminists who would end this "unequal raising" by also raising girls to be aggressive and competitive. Myself I would rather raise the boys to be more co-operative and nurturing. The difference would be between giving women an equal opportunity to be a part of "Hisland" or transforming society into something more like "Herland". The first one I oppose since I am a twenty year critic of "Hisland". The 2nd I support fully, except that Charlotte did not like sex, and what is up with that?

76. hostility towards women? Angry rhetoric?
For the latter, why shouldn't I be angry about injustice? And lies? And exploitation?

For the former, give me some examples? See if you can tell me who drew first blood? True, I have struck a 16 year old girl, but only after I was unable to keep a bunch of them from pushing their way into my home. They were demented teenage hoodlums who spent years harrassing me.

I am not happy that you saw fit to take a cheap shot at me instead of responding to my comments about two types of feminism. Sing along with me "how can people be so heartless? How can people be so cold? ..."

78. I don't think it's about who drew first blood,
or even decking a 16-year-old who was intent on invading your home. I'm sorry to say that you kind of lost me on your socialist vs capitalist feminist bit up there but I couldn't help but pick up a vibe of at least some degree of hostility toward women, all the same.

I've been treated pretty badly by some women, but it was not that they were defective women so much as just defective people. For me to blame women, in general, would have ben self-defeating, because some of my best friends actually are women and I just love the whole idea and reality of women. I mean, not every woman (just as I don't like a lot of people, in general), but I'm not going to write off half of humankind because I got burned a few times.

I stayed clear of women after one traumatic and drawn-out episode but that was not because I recognized that women are inherently toxic to me but rather that, at that time, I was likely to go and impale myself on the same sword (so to speak) yet again. It worked, too. I just needed the time-out to find out more about myself and build a few handy walls. Women are different than men, in many ways - and not just physiologically - but women and men ultimately have more in common as humans than what divides them as genders and social roles.

92. you are all right gump, but what is with that hair?
It is sort of a stereotype, but women certainly have the upper hand over me. Maybe that is why they have contempt for me.

On my 33rd birthday, this woman friend was determined to hang out with me. I told her I did not want any cake. So there we were in the store buying cake and she says "pick out a cake." I say "whatever cake you want". She says "no, you have to pick a cake". So I finally pick Angel Food Cake and she says "wow, you finally made a decision." Oblivious to the fact that my previous decision of "no cake" was over-ruled and I was required, out of all the cakes I did not want, to pick a cake. And then to get insulted as indecisive on my own GD birthday of all days.

I do not think it is anti-women to point out that in my case, my view, women are more than equals. It is like you are asking a major to treat a general as an equal. Of course, I am perhaps exceptional that way, which is why I am in such demand. As they say, "the trouble with equality, is that people only desire it with their superiors".

Like Cliffy, my rapier wit is sometimes hard to take. Get me another Coke Sammy. You know I am not saying anything about Gump's hair, but only quoting from Wierd Al Yankovic - my hero.

Wouldn't the holdouts, at least under that definition, be basically misogynists or brainwashed women? I mean, we're not talking superiority here, but mere equality for half of the human species. Of course, realistically, in some parts of the world that may never be possible.

And if you join now, you get a signed copy of Helen Reddy's "I Am Woman." Well, according to Ms Velma, anyway... :D

Operators are standing by!

It's been somewhat disheartening how few men have spoken up for women in some of the threads recently. Your support means much.

Here's a :toast: to the winning side.

50. Thanks! Question, though. Does being a feminist mean
that I can still beat the crap out of misogynists, when and if appropriate? Because cro-Magnon, testosterone-fueled behavior would still seem to have a small place in today's world. :D

I jest, of course. Almost. :loveya:

Long live the struggle!

Actually, may it be short-lived, morphing into vigilance over successful societal transformations in whatever societies are amenable.

53. Yeah Forrest, but you'll REALLY impress me when you become a card carrying
member of Heartless Bitches International.

http://www.heartless-bitches.com/

Checklist, to which of course you will answer a hearty YES to each:

The Heartless Manifesto

Do really sappy, insipid, "always and forever" love poems make you want to puke? (and that goes for Bon Jovi lyrics too!)

Do you find typical "Women's Magazines" to be either stomach turning or pathetically laughable?

Are you tired of the walking wounded moping around expecting that the world owes them something because they are victims?

Do you find the likes of Michael Bolton and Kenny G. revolting?

Does the sight of an incredibly handsome man turn you off, cause so many of them have room-temperature IQ's, and obnoxious or non-existent personalities? (Forrest, you can substitute "women" here--LOL!)

Are you sick of lazy women who use emotional and sexual manipulation to get what they want instead of using their own brains and muscles?

Are you fed up with women who feel they HAVE to be in a "Relationship" in order to be whole, and will sacrifice their self-esteem and personal growth in order to avoid being on their own?

Are you tired of men and women who are emotional children, and won't accept responsibility for their actions or behavior?

Do you want to SMACK women who play "helpless" just to gain male attention and stroke male egos?

Have you run out of sympathy for your Female friends who continually whine about how awful MEN ARE, but then they keep dating the same kind of ASSHOLES, over and OVER, AND OVER AGAIN!?

Are you fed up with your Male friends who are looking to date a woman with the appearance of a supermodel, and yet they continually whine about how "women don't like nice guys - they only want good-looking assholes"???

Do the words "If you REALLY loved me...." turn your heart to ice??!!!

Do you retch in response to "The Rules", and laugh uproariously at "The Code"?

Have you HAD IT with people telling you that you are TOO LOUD, TOO ASSERTIVE, or TOO OPINIONATED?

Do you wish you had a button that said: "Thank you for sharing, now SHUT UP and quit Whining!" ????

Do you ever get tired of those whiners and their online "journals"? Or the guys who hit on you and you politely decline, and they keep pestering you and pestering you, and pestering you like some obnoxious, festering, pus-filled sore, until you finally have to WHAP them over the head with a VERY LARGE CLUE-BY-FOUR (tm)....?

Do you feel like you might as well "get hung for a sheep as a lamb", because no matter how POLITELY you try to turn down some guy's advances, you invariably get called a "Bitch"? (Forrest, you don't HAVE to answer this one. :-) )

If you answered YES to all of the above, (or if Forrest, to all that apply) then Heartless Bitches International wants YOU. Heartless Bitches is now recruiting! Join up and be proud to use phrases like:

"Keep it in your pants, asshole"
"Oh why don't you just masturbate and get over it!?"
"No, you can't watch."
"Wah, fuckin', Wah."

All card-carrying members will be sent a card to carry (if you send in the SASE), so you can proudly display your HBI membership card when some clueless jerk tries to give you grief.

56. I flunked!
Jeez, Ms child...you rtun with a wild crowd. :D

And I thought Women Who Run With Wolves were tough!

Let's see...

Do really sappy, insipid, "always and forever" love poems make you want to puke? (and that goes for Bon Jovi lyrics too!)

Well, sometimes. But "always and forever" happens to be a line from the song Pledging My Love, so I suppose I can't really lay down the hallowed 'yes' on this one. :-(

Do you find typical "Women's Magazines" to be either stomach turning or pathetically laughable?

Well...um...I guess so. Though Sun Tzu would want me to read them to familiarize myself with my opposite number's strategery and thinking. :-)

Are you tired of the walking wounded moping around expecting that the world owes them something because they are victims?

YES, male or female. Right on, sisters!

Do you find the likes of Michael Bolton and Kenny G. revolting?

YES! Mr Bolton the most - he's the anti-Elvis, anti-Wilson, anti-Jackie, anti-James, anti-Otis.

Does the sight of an incredibly handsome man turn you off, cause so many of them have room-temperature IQ's, and obnoxious or non-existent personalities? (Forrest, you can substitute "women" here--LOL!)

Oh, thanks...mighty big of you. :P

Nope, because they might not have room-temperature IQs and obnoxious or nonexistent personalities. You never know.

Are you sick of lazy women who use emotional and sexual manipulation to get what they want instead of using their own brains and muscles?

Yes! I married one, dammit. :o

Not on purpose, though.

Are you fed up with women who feel they HAVE to be in a "Relationship" in order to be whole, and will sacrifice their self-esteem and personal growth in order to avoid being on their own?

YES!! Men, too.

Are you tired of men and women who are emotional children, and won't accept responsibility for their actions or behavior?

YES!

Do you want to SMACK women who play "helpless" just to gain male attention and stroke male egos?

Well, yes, but I'd be nasty brute if I went around smacking women, so I'd prefer to call my friendly (or unfriendly, as the case may be) neighborhood Heartless Bitch to do the deed for me.

Have you run out of sympathy for your Female friends who continually whine about how awful MEN ARE, but then they keep dating the same kind of ASSHOLES, over and OVER, AND OVER AGAIN!?

YES! And the same goes for marrying them over and over again, for both men and women.

Are you fed up with your Male friends who are looking to date a woman with the appearance of a supermodel, and yet they continually whine about how "women don't like nice guys - they only want good-looking assholes"???

Yes!

Do the words "If you REALLY loved me...." turn your heart to ice??!!!

Oh, yes!

Do you retch in response to "The Rules", and laugh uproariously at "The Code"?

I probably would, if I knew them. I laugh in the face of rules! (Note to moderators: this does not, of course, include DU's rules...I hope that I wasn't being too insensitive in this respect and I heartily apologize if I may have inadventently caused umbrage)

Have you HAD IT with people telling you that you are TOO LOUD, TOO ASSERTIVE, or TOO OPINIONATED?

YES! At the risk of being too loud, assertive,or opinionated...

Do you wish you had a button that said: "Thank you for sharing, now SHUT UP and quit Whining!" ????

Yes. Please!

Did the person who wrote this have issues? :-)

Um...I've no experience from which to extrapolate...

Do you feel like you might as well "get hung for a sheep as a lamb", because no matter how POLITELY you try to turn down some guy's advances, you invariably get called a "Bitch"? (Forrest, you don't HAVE to answer this one. :-) )

I don't have to answer it? Cool. Because I get nervous when I see "well" and "hung" in the same sentence of a questionnaire.

Can I at least use the catchphrases?

I mean, for a dude, I think I did averagely okey-dokey at being a Heartless Bitch...can I maybe get half a membership card? You know, one that'd read "less itch."

Still trying to catch a breath after laughing at your responses! OMG too funny. I think I am going to add Wah fuckin'Wah to my sig line. LOL!

Well, I would be happy to sponsor you as an honorary member. So, read the below, and if you agree, go ahead and submit ;-)
************
It's EASY (and FREE!), if you really are a Heartless Bitch. Just tell us what makes you so Heartless... is it your intolerance for the idiots and weakminded of the world? Is it the fact that you are assertive or aggressive in going after what you want? Is it because you refuse to be a "nice" girl? Is it the way you run your life according to your own dictates? Tell us about it!

Those who get accepted as members will have their name (first name only) and comments posted to our "Real Life Members" section. In addition, members can send in for their own membership card, get discounts on HBI products, and join our exclusive discussion forum, "The BitchBoard". In the future, we hope to be offering even more services for members!

BUT.... don't bother applying if you are a "princess", whiner, or man-hater. Yeah, men piss us off at times, and so do a lot of women. It's our assertiveness, independence, intolerance for whining, and take-no-shit attitude that makes us Heartless, not our generic hatred for the entire male gender. Wail on the losers of either gender - for sure, but spare me the hyperbole. Get it? Good.

70. how about another catch phrase?
"why don't you just get a sex-change and get over it?"

Reading that has unleashed the gamma radiation in me, and the madder Hulk gets, the stronger Hulk gets. I am spoiling for a fight now.

Good example, though, of the wrong kind of feminist. Another catch phrase: "the world is full of hate, pass it on!!!"

Whatta ya bet Ann Coulter is a member? And Condi Rice too? And Ayn Rand?

Dissing Michael Bolton? I became a Bolton fan the first time I heard "Everybody's Crazy". Give it a listen.

Truly, this is a right wing philosophy: "Wail on the losers of either gender - for sure, but spare me the hyperbole." My idea of a loser is someone who thinks they are smarter than everybody else, but they write "wail" when they mean "whale". In my case, today, room temperature is only 60 degrees. According to the online quiz I am 100 degrees warmer than that. I find it bizarre that people at 110 spend so much time talking about how stupid those at 100 are. Obviously anyone who believes in love, empathy, and compassion is a nidiot.

You do not recognize a parody of Barbara Bush?

I hope my post was deleted for the offensive jokes and not for my attempted parody. BTW - did anyone notice that the janitor joke (and janitor happens to be my current occupation, increasing the irony) was from the great movie "Soul Man"?

So much for my attempt at a reductio ad absurdum. Your HBI is as offensive to me as the two "jokes" I posted. I still do not get it - isn't "wah, f***in, wah" what Freepers always say to Al Gore? What am I missing (besides courage I mean)?

It is time for me to get back to my life. Here I seem to be ignored or misunderstood, if not deleted. My own fault for not being simple enough. Either that or I am too arrogant.

Please email me if it is possible or I am worth enlightening. I probably won't be reading threads for a while. I know, I know, good riddance to bad rubbish. How can I be paranoid when they really are out to get me because I so deserve to be "got"?

81. It's ok proles, he outed me...
I am a Republican Soccer Mom who stays home all day eating bonbons while calling up other RSMs and griping about the "welfare queen" in our church ladies' group.

After I get my nails polished, I jump in my SUV and drive past the homeless shelter to the gym, where, while I work out, I enjoy insulting the fatties.

Then, I pick up supper in styro containers from the local bbq joint, and my husband and 2.5 children sit down and thank god we are more fortunate than the losers I enjoy wailing/whaling on. We thank the maker that he made plenty of people less fortunate than us so that we can pass our days making fun of them.

When I tuck myself in bed, my husband and I do it missionary, and then I fall asleep and dream about the Hummer he will purchase for me tomorrow, if I give him a blow job. Thank god for suburban Republican life.

You outted me. Hope I don't get banned. :eyes:
