Tom Waits appreciation post.... |
|
Damn, I love this guys music. I'm not someone who is or who gets star struck, but if I could have the opportunity to hang out with any artist and spend a day watching them work and do their thing it would be him. Just the different elements and sounds he adds to his music, his songwriting style, everything I've read about his kitchen sink recording technique. And overall just his observational eye for the happy/sad dichotomy of the world around him.
Any other fans out there? Favorite albums or songs?
My favorite album is either Bone Machine or Blue Valentine. Favorite songs include: Hope That I Don't Fall In Love With You I Don't Want To Grow Up Time Telephone Call From Istanbul

3. one of my all time favorites |

Whenever I cover his songs, I always get a great crowd response. 'Burma Shave' is one of the best pieces of art made in the 20th century in any media, if you ask me.

The Ramones do a great version of I Dont Want To Grow Up.
My favs would be Shore Leave,Frank's Wild Years and Trouble's Braids.
Anyone who likes Tom should definately check out Nick Cave. He's even better to my ears.See if you can locate the songs God Is In The House or As I Sat Sadly By Her Side. He's rather offbeat like Tom's stuff is but with smoother vocals.

10. I love Nick Cave too, but they are 2 different animals completely.. |
|
Nick is much more gothic and dark. Tom Waits is more positive in his overall undercurrent. Nick writes about that darkness and Tom writes about the light within the darkness.

I like darker music myself so maybe that's why I prefer Nick. Can't really go wrong with either one though.

14. I don't know Nick Cave, but why would you want smoother vocals? |
|
Tom Waits is a Jazz Vocalist. Part of his greatness is that he keeps you on edge thinking he can never hit that note, almost casually misses it two or three times, and then at the precise moment the song needs it, he delivers it dead on as if saying, see the song is that melody, but its also so much more than that melody. He's a great interpretive vocalist who often intertwines "covers" into the fabric of his music.

I said once here in another thread that listening to Tom Waits makes you feel like you're drinking scotch even if you're not drinking scotch.

when I first heard Bone Machine I thought it was terrible noise (my friend played it for me). But the more I listened to it the more I started to like it. Today Tom Waits is one of my all time faves. I have everything he's done since Bone Machine but haven't heard much of his earlier stuff.

Man, what a great, incredible show that was.
Also totally cool was the other one he recently did a couple years ago with wilson, "Woyczek". That was totally cool, too.
Sadly, I missed "Alice".
Waits is a great talent!
