1. That's the one with Tom Cruise and Penelope Cruz, right?
I'm no Tom Cruise fan, but I thought he gave one of his best performances in that movie. I liked the movie and I saw it twice. It was sad, but I liked the way it ended.

2. Based on a Spanish movie ...
Can't remember the Spanish title, but it's translates to "open your eyes".

The Spanish film also stars Penelope Cruz. It is very much worth renting if you see it..

7. Correction: "Abre Los ojos"
The original version is grimmer, darker, and a little more violent than the "hollywoodized" version though much of the scenes are word for word and even the camera work is almost idential. It's interesting to note that Penelope Cruz plays the same role in both movies, neat to get paid for the same role twice. I really enjoyed the original and would recommend it to anyone.

4. Vanilla Sky was such tripe
The ending was possibly the worst one I've seen for a movie (waaaay too much exposition). Cruise was okay; so was Cruz. But the whole thing added up to nothing more than the usual sentimental tripe from Crowe. Very overrated.

8. Check out the original, then.
You'll find its treatment of the plot to be more palatable to the discriminating movie-goer.
