sound still not working sigh
Maybe its a problem with the sound card. Guys should I just open the CPU and replace the soundcard with a new one. I still get "waveout format not supported" I miss being about to listen to music, play video games, and add new things to my iPod, sigh :( I need to replace my iPod as well, and get new games. Sheesh, this stinks. I'll be fine but do you think a new sound card is a good idea.

Ok I got Windows XP and when I try to play my MP3s I get the message "Waveout Format not supported" I dont get it. I think I need a new sound card really. I am not gonna go in the CPU about it alone though, I can get like a friend or something to do that. Maybe my sound card needs replaced. I miss my music and games so much.

4. Have you recently added software or hardware to your system?
Maybe something you added was a little, say haphazard with its installation process.

6. all drivers are up to date?
If all drivers are up to date, and nothing recently installed messed with things they shouldn't haved messed with, I'd say rip that dead puppy out of there and drop a new one in.

And do it yourself, its the easiest thing in the world to do. Hell, opening the case might be the hardest part.

12. Are you getting *no* sound at all?
Not even system sounds?

Under Start/Settings/Control Panel/Sounds and Audion Devices make certain that your soundcard is selected and nothing is *muted*.
That your speaker volume is *up* and you have "desktop stereo spealers" selected.
Under Sound Schemes select "MS Default".
(click on any of the sounds to preview)

Under "Hardware" click on "Properties" and make certain "this device is working properly".

If after doing all of this and updating the drivers and still no sound, then yes, your soundcard is dead.
If possible borrow one from another computer.
Or buy a *cheap* one from Office Depot or Best Buy(not CompUSA) and test it with that one... then go out and buy SoundBlaster 2 ZS Platinum Pro.
Woohoo!

14. You see the odd thing is I go there
and the sound stuff is like covered over like I cant choose an opition. Also my audio stuff's location cant be located. Maybe I can get the one from the old computer I dont know, or just buy a new one being that someone is gonna use the old comp. I should just get a new card. It needs to be installed and Dell promised to send the desk but I got notta.

17. I think I see the problem.
If you have an onboard soundcard, one built into the motherboard, then you'll probably want to get a sound card anyway.

Like I said in the other post, I think the problem is you didn't get the *motherboard* audio drivers installed after you reinstalled the OS.

In any event just find the cheapest 32bit audio card you can find... I wouldn't spend more than $40 unless you *really* need premium gaming sound...
Installing the card itself should be fairly straightforward.
Just find an empty slot, hook the CD player to it and install the latest drivers from online.
You should be good to go.

Good Luck.

8. IMHO, I'd...
Go to system properties, find the sound card, right click on it and select "remove."

Then reboot your computer and let your OS find the card again and follow the wizard in reinstalling the drivers.

9. MMJB?
"Waveout Format not supported" Googled comes up with Music Match problems.

Get rid of Music Match and try again.

Reinstall the latest drivers for your soundcard.

Download *all* of the latest patches from MS.
Make sure to get the latest Windows Media player or whichever version of Winamp is most stable(I heard the newest one wasn't good).

15. The problem isn't your soundcard but MMJB.
//See I dont know what my soundcard is. My computer cant detect it for whatever reason.//
It doesn't show up under System Properties/Hardware/Device Manager/Sound Video and Game?
You *might* have an onboard soundcard and you didn't install the drivers correctly when you reinstalled the OS.
I've got another system just like that.
What brand is your computer?

//Maybe I should download Itunes I hear good things, but I like MMJB.//
Uninstall MMJB and try the default Windows Media player.

ITunes can't be any worse than MMJB.

I think that could be it that I didnt reinstall the drivers correctly but I cant find the disk for them. I may just get a new soundcard if this doesnt work.

23. Hmm...
Go here: http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/category.aspx/desktops?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs
And see which ones look like yours.

Do you have the receipt or warrenty info?

This link explains the Dell Service Tag:
https://support.dell.com/productselection.aspx

If you listed the specs of your computer we could probably figure it out.
Hard drive number and size.
Processor type and speed.
Amount of RAM.
Type of CD player.
Type of Videocard.

Just right click on "My Computer" and click "Properties" to get most of this info.

32. Which Dimension?
If it is an XPS, according to the spec sheets you've already got one of the top of the line sound cards in it.

Driver downloads.
http://us.creative.com/support/downloads/welcome.asp
Select:
SoundBlaster
24 Bit Advanced HD
Sound Blaster Audigy 2(nothing else)
File type: Driver
English
XP

The file should be:
Audigy 2 DriverPack 3 (WDM Drivers)
Size : 6.88 MB

You can download the manuals too if you need 'em.

Otherwise just download this to your computer and run the program.

If this doesn't fix your problem you need to get back in touch with Dell Support.
That's an expensive soundcard.

22. I would take it to one of those super geek stores
They'll put your computer on the bench and probably tell you what's wrong with it in about 5 minutes. If it's a sound card, they can throw one in there for you. It won't take a minute and sound cards aren't very expensive.

31. spend as little as possible on the card
there really isn't much difference between cards unless you are really hard core into it. i've always used integrated sound and it sounds fine. i play lots of games and have played on "premium" systems that sound better but cost ALOT more.

i'd be willing to bet there is nothing wrong hardware wise, as it's pretty rare for something to actually break.

if you bought the comp new, where's the receipt? it should have a list of components on it.
