The only picture I have of me as a child is one my great aunt had til she died. She glued it to a small glass pane, backed it with a piece of paper and then painted the whole back with some type of gold paint.
It doesn't scan well at all!

It looks like you were dragged into the picture. You are half turned away from the other figures, who are very engaged in the picture taking. It's not clear why nobody's smiling, it may be that the group wasn't expecting the picture to be snapped at just that instant.

Your mother looks like she has a strong personality. The baby has disrupted the family dynamics, leaving you to negotiate your place in the family. That may be what the pout is about, yet another time you have to give way to this little usurper. The way everyone is dressed suggests it was some formal occasion, possibly something to do with the baby. You've just been lectured to about being more cooperative, and you're making an effort.

Judging from the way your mother's hair is blowing, it's an outdoors picture, but it looks like it's covered in some way. It's possibly under the arches of the outside of a church ... which would explain the formal occasion, something to do with the baby.

You are simply not getting your way, and your mother is flatly overruling you. It shows in her face, it shows in your face. Your brother is staying out of it.

Putting it together ... I'd say that you've just been scolded into posing for the picture. You don't like the occasion, because you're all dressed up and pretty, and you're being ordered around like an extra. Your mother has star quality and you do too because she encourages it. But you didn't win top billing on the day the photo was taken, and you are not pleased.

I've got a nosey question about the Officers.

Do they all speak like they're remnants of the upper class or do some speak with normal, regional accents?

I realise I might sound like a total arsehole but I I've never thought to ask my Dad.

It's just when I here officers speak on BBC it's semms they've come out of Eton.

Knowing more or less the history of the British Army I was wondering if the officer still came form the so-called upper classes or if everyone had a more or less equal chance.
