Wouldn't you like to be a hippie too?
The philosophy was solid. Sure, some took it to extremes (check out the top 10 conservative idiots today - they carried hypocrisy to the extreme).

What's wrong with this?

"..To be a hippie you must believe in Peace as the way to resolve differences among peoples, ideologies and religions. The way to peace is through love and tolerance. Loving means accepting others as they are, giving them freedom to express themselves and not judging their behaviors according to a narrow definition. This is the core of the hippie philosophy. Freedom is the paramount virtue in this system. Freedom to do as one pleases, go where the flow takes you, and being open to new experiences... The way of the hippie never died, or went underground or was rediscovered. There have always been hippies from the first time society laid down rules, to Henry David Thoreau, to John Lennon, to you and me... So being a hippie is not a matter of dress, behavior, economic status, or social milieu. It is a philosophical approach to life that emphasizes freedom, peace, love and a respect for others and the earth. As hippies age they come to terms with the same situations all humans must face. Wiser than before, let’s help the younger hippies find a way to save the earth and achieve more freedom than we could ever dream of. Let’s embrace the internet, unite on the web, and become all we are destined to be." -Skip, The Hippyland

18. Some sold out, some didn't
Behold: organic farming, solar technology, musical impulses, complementary healing practices, and a thousand and one sustainable initiatives that are still extant, still inspiring.

7. It is spelled "incoherent"

But I kind of have to agree in some cases. There are quite a few people who call themselves hippies who just kind of use it to act self-righteous. There are both good and bad hippies, just like there are good and bad christians, women, men, jews, black people and any other group.

9. I am a hippie
can't help it. I was born in 1960 and growing up I thought hippies were just the coolest thing ever. Then when I was old enough to choose my own way it was the seventies. Ugh, disco was king and anything smacking of the 60's was considered totally unhip. But in the 80's I went the total hippie route and I have no regrets. I don't dress like a hippie but my hair is to my ass so it kinda gives me away...

14. It's a difficult question for me
because, in many ways, I consider myself in agreement with hippie thinking. And I agree with those who say that being a "hippie" is more of a way of experiencing and coming to terms with living than an outward manifestation, like a particular way of dressing or grooming. "The Gnostics" by Jacques LaCarriere will convince anyone that hippies have been around for a long, long time.
The problem, for me, is that I went to a hippie school for college - a place that *never* left the 60s behind. I was rejected by many of these soi-disant freethinkers because I looked (their words) "like an insurance salesman." Luckily, I found a number of good friends who saw past my devious cleancut appearance, but I learned that many hippies are among the most shallow, intolerant people to be found anywhere.
But it's still true what some punk once said: What's so funny about peace, love and understanding?

16. "Scary Monsters..."
Edited on Mon Nov-03-03 10:52 PM by phrenzy
Oh man - LOL - this is too damn funny - I have to say first - to clear up - my feelings on the 'original' hippies is far different from my feelings on modern hippies (and YES they do indeed exist) - Although - Looking back, I find them thoroughly unattractive - much as I find the 'Disco' style of the 70s to look utterly ridiculous.

Anyway, I actually stole the "Monster Box" line from David Spade from Saturday Night Live - he was doing one of those 'Hollywood Minute' things and it was right around when Alanis Morrissette did her 'Thank You' video where she was naked. He did a kind of aside pretending to be speaking in her voice about how she's going to make a visual impact by showing her "Monster Box"

Anyway, just thank god I never brought up 'Dick Cheese'

Heh -

"Hey, you got your Dick Cheese in my Monster Box - No your Monster Box is around my Dick Cheese! Two great tastes that taste great together!"

OK, impressed by my utterly juvenile and crude sense of humor yet. Oh man, sorry.

17. Great post
One of the things that drew me to the movement of the 60's was the non-materialistic nature of hippies. I didn't see that mentioned anywhere above.

Very interesting website, I bookmarked it for future reading. Thanks.
