As a child, what was the greatest mess you made in your parent's house?
Me - in the middle of the summer, I missed the snow. So i took a bottle of talcum powder and coated my entire bedroom in a fine layer of "snow". My mom was pissed till i explained my rationale - then it was cute. TOGETHER, we spent a lot of time cleaning that mess up. :D

1. I once, when I was about 7,
took one of those chubby Crayola crayons in a magenta-like color and colored about a half an inch layer of it on my mother's new carpet.

Have no idea why. Just felt compelled to do it. I did it in an out-of-the-way place, though, behind a recliner.

2. Not me but my son
set off a gross (144!) bottle rockets in my house. I put him on fireworks restrictions for life. To this day, he cannot bring fireworks into my home (he is 27 now).

3. Maybe not the greatest, but the most memorable
When I was 14 or so, I was clowning around with a football in the living room and pumped the ball like I was faking a pass. The ball blooped out of my hand and through the (hold on -- I still live here -- let me get a tape measure) 42" x 40" front window AND the corresponding storm window as well.
I thought dad was going to kill me (dad would occasionally kill me over stupid stuff like that), but he was actually pretty cool about the whole thing. Of course I had to pay for the windows, but that was the least I could do, considering.
Then again, this was about the same time that my older brother Chuck took apart the engine of dad's 1961 Econoline van and put it back together with three fewer parts. I'm no mechanic and I can't say what parts they were, but they must have been important because dad's van never ever ran again.
John
Chuck went into the Army almost immediately thereafter. And the football/front window thing was probably small potatoes comparatively.

5. Our TV had a
"remote holder" built into the front of it, basically a square hole for the remote to set into and when I was about two-ish, I stuffed it full of play-dough. We still have the TV, but not the remote, I guess that's my fault.

8. I tried to do the dishes for my Mom.
Edited on Sat Jul-09-05 11:15 AM by mutley_r_us
I put all the dishes in the dishwasher and I used regular dish detergent, the liquid kind for handwashing. Needless to say it wasn't long before soap and water were all over the kitchen. Mom was pissed, but she soon realized that I was only trying to help and just didn't know better. I think I was around 9 or 10 when this happened.

10. Got up before my parent's were awake
and tried to make breakfast. I must have been about 3-4 years old and my baby brother was about 2....we crisco'ed, egged and floured the kitchen pretty well before we were caught. I can also remember drawing on the walls of my room with pencils and crayons....I was making it beautiful...I had no conception it was destructive.

11. Between the off-course chemical rockets and the slight incident with
the alcohol burner from my chemistry set that almost set fire to the house? Hard call. :P

Oh, and there also was the series of acid burns in my bedroom carpet from the aforementioned chemistry set.

To my parents' credit, they not only let me live, but later fully subsidized a well-rounded college education in the hard sciences, where they paid my school to let me make all the messes I wanted and get good grades for it. :D

13. Ok, I didn't make a mess of my house
but I made a mess of myself when I was about 1 and a half years old to 2. My mom tells me that she had woken up in the middle of the night and came to my room. She looked in my crib and apparently I had taken off my (soiled) diapers and had rubbed feces all over myself. She said it was all over my crib, the walls and was even in my mouth. I don't remember this but it sounds reallly funny.

14. My mom gave me a bowl of tomato sauce to set on the table.
It slipped out of my hands before I set it down... it was a plastic bowl, and because of the way it flexed when it landed on the table, the sauce LAUNCHED out of the bowl, with a significant portion of it ending up on the ceiling... they had to re-paint and they found my explanation less than convincing....

15. My mom was painting the window
trim and when she left the room for a phone call I decided to 'help' and painted the windows for her. I still remember the shocked look on her face when she came back. I was so pleased with myself too. Guess I was about 4 yrs old. Once she recovered though she laughed about it and it became one of those stories that got told over and over.

16. Making hydrogen sulfide gas
Christmas..many years ago. I asked for a chemistry set, and Santa helped get me a really nice one. Alcohol lamps, all kinds of chemicals, what a present!!!

But I immediately turned the pages for the fun experiments. The rotten egg smell. On a snowy, wintry day.

Closed the basement door, and got to work.

Mom was cooking dinner, when she noticed the fumes coming from the basement up to the kitchen...."What the hell is that?" Get that smell out of this house!!!

A chemist was born....LOL...

17. I once walked into a can of shoe polish my sister had left on the floor
of her room. I tracked it all over the house, and smeared it on my parents' new sofa before I was even aware of it.

Mom and Dad were pissed, I can tell you! B-)

19. I found a pen...
that worked magnificently on the bathroom sink. My art adorned the sink bathtub and toilet. 'Adorned' meaning almost entirely covering.

My parents were inclined to show a somewhat philistine attitude towards my creations.

It made a noise sort of like your airbag makes when it goes of. Pooooooooft. And dust went everywhere!

22. Oh there are so many I can not name them
I knocked a ceiling fan off the ceiling.

But my favorite thing was to use furniture polish on our stairs. It was great fun watching people slip and slide on the highly polished steps. I also put furniture polish on the floor in front of the fridge. You could actually slid past the fridge when you stopped to open it.

Though the worst thing we did was at my grandmothers. It was their neighbors newly whitewashed garage wall. My grandmother had a plum tree in her backyard, and there were a lot of over ripe plums on the ground. It was right next to the neighbors garage. My cousin and I had a contest to see who could make the biggest spatter. Oh man did we get in trouble. We had to repaint the garage.

24. It was during my candle making phase
Some idiot had bought me a candle making kit for Christmas and I got to work in the kitchen. I ruined several of my mother's pots and pans, got hot wax on just about everything, as well as the cool colored paints they provided to decorate the finished candles...

My mother was not entirely happy but she did admire my creativity and independence. :eyes:

25. my Shirley Temple republican grandma's parlor had a beige border in the
dark-green carpet, and I tried to simulate it at home with foundation rubbed into our bedroom carpet: covered about a half square foot before my mom came out of the bathroom. I was 5-6 then.
