Hey, I found the puppy you left off in the "country" to be free!
Edited on Sat Jul-09-05 05:01 PM by Wcross
I was locking my gate after returning home the other day. I saw the turkey vultures all sitting on a fence and a few on the ground eating. Curiousity got the better of me and I went to investigate what they were having for dinner. You guessed it, it was your puppy! He sure was a cute looking little guy. I bet if you had taken him to the animal shelter he would have found a loving home with some human beings rather than the home he arrived at populated by shit impersonating human beings. If you had taken him to town maybe some kind soul would have taken him in and done the right thing.
Don't worry, have another beer and relax. He probably died from the lack of water. His suffering probably didn't last for more than a day or two. You can feel good about helping nature because Turkey vultures have to eat too.

Oh, if I ever witness you dumping an animal on my road you will remember the day for the rest of your life.

P.S.- this post WAS inspired by purr's post about animal dumping. The event described is true.

3. I used to rent a place on a farm
There was a nutty lady who used to take people's unwanted cats. Most of them she brought to the farm and let loose in the barn. She'd turn up once or twice a week to put out some food but for the most part the cats were left on their own.

Killed me. Here were all these poor creatures, some of them getting on in years who after living as domestic pets had to fend for themselves in a cold and drafty barn. They had to find a place in the pecking order with some 30 or 40 other cats - invariably there were fights and injuries and even deaths. They got no love, no affection, no veterinary care, no nothing.

After numerous complaints to the local humane society, they were all rounded up (which took weeks since most were feral by this time and baited cages had to be used) - most were no doubt put down due to health issues and their feral nature. Besides there were so many of them, they no doubt taxed the resources of our small community humane society.

It was also discovered that this lady had another 20 or 30 cats in her home, all confined to ONE room. She thought she was doing a service to them, saving them from death. Quick and humane death would have been infinitely better than the fate they suffered.

4. Amazing the misguided notions of "humanity"
Edited on Sat Jul-09-05 05:36 PM by Tallison
When I was living in Buckingham Co. Va., one neighbors NEVER spayed any of their cats which needless to say propagated exponentially while I was down there, provided lots of fodder for cars, dogs, wild foxes, whatever. I once offered to pay for spaying the matriarch of this mess, which Mom and Dad didn't want because the kids found the kittens so cute - never mind that their cuteness quotient and hence value to the family seemed to diminish proportional to the cats' ages until they became completely dispensable. Another time I offered to take a new litter to the local shelter, and Mom said, "God no, that's where they kill animals!" Of course, with five kids and a CPS record this family seemed to have a breeding problem themselves. Talk about expensive ignorance...

5. Thats how I aqquired my "pack"
Neighbor down the street was renting the farmhouse and didn't do anything for the dogs he had. The house burned down and he had to move to an apartment in town that didn't allow pets. His landlord approached me about taking in one adult male and two females. They were friendly dogs and I knew they would be better with me than anywhere else. Next thing I know both of the girls had a litter (two weeks after they moved in). Only three pups survived so I decided they would be better off with me than anywhere else. All six are spayed/neutered and have regular vet care. I was talking to the landlord guy and he told me "Angel" had already had 10 litters before I put an end to her career!

7. I guess some people look at animals' lives as a validation for their own

suffering in life. They must figure, If my life's in chaos, why should my animal have it any better (even if it takes proportionally less effort to make it so)? It's part of such a big cycle of misguided attitudes about quality of life being somehow proportional to higher numbers in the population.

Good for you and your pups and their unborn future litters that were saved from a paw to mouth existence. I adopted a cat once from a rural SPCA, got her to the vet within a few days for spaying only to find out during the operation that she was 3 weeks pregnant! As the vet said it would be feasible I told him to go ahead with the "abortion" and fixing. Never knew before that that was possible with animals... Still strikes me as strange sometimes, that my sweet Daisy cat had an abortion!
