7. Not if you are Lacto-ova |

Edited on Sun Jul-10-05 03:06 PM by Jara sang
Lact-ova don't do milk or eggs. Human beings were never meant to drink bovine milk.

Lacto-ovo people DO do eggs and cow milk. Human breastmilk is considered vegan.

11. Why not? You're talking about a human mother |
|
providing human milk to a human child. No animals are killed or harmed, the mother doesn't have to be dosed with antibiotics and drugs to stimulate milk production since she's not being used to produce large quantities of milk for the dairy industry.
I don't think it is at all antithetical to vegetarianism or veganism. What else would a vegetarian/ vegan mother do? Feed soy formula to her baby? She certainly wouldn't want to feed formula based on cow or goat milk.

12. My friend staying with says he knows a woman who says "No" |
|
She's vegetarian, and she refused to breast feed her child because she believes that it is wrong, because it isn't vegetarian.

19. And my friend who was here was allergic to formula, |
|
and he said, "If that woman had been my mom, I would have died, because I *had* to be breastfed".
I wonder how the vegetarian woman who thought breastsfeeding was akin to meat eating would have handled the situation if her children were allergic to formula or soy or other alternatives.

21. Wow, that's really stupid |
|
because Formula derives some of it's vitamins from Lanolin, which isn't vegetarian.
We're mammals. Our babies are meant to drink our milk, any dietary ideal that takes away from that experience needs to be reevaluated and changed.
Mother's milk is veg*n as long as mother's diet is.

Vegetariainism and veganism is based on either health or concern for the affected animals or both. Breastfeeding is most healthy for the baby. The mother, if she is doing it because she chooses, is not being harmed in anyway by breastfeeding.

20. Let's take this a step further.... Is it OK to "Pump" milk |
|
My wife says that it is painful at times and uncomfortable all the time. She feels akin to a Dairy Animal while doing it, however she feels that a banked supply of her breast milk is a good thing for the child. Which way do the Vegans/Veggies go on this one?

Sometimes you must, especially if you have any kind of schedule to maintain.
Just be sure to label them clearly in the refrigerator. :D
