WARNING: I don't really give anything away, but if you want to know NOTHING about this movie, don't read any further, ok?
Maybe I'm crazy, but damn that was a good movie.
Take the spirit of Shirley Jackson, a bit of The Matrix, some futuristic elements of The Fifth Element, a lot of Brave New World and a HELL of a lot of Logan's Run, and then mix it up and make it better than the sum of its parts and you have "The Island."
By the way, if you like REALLY well-done action scenes and VERY intense violent scenes, you got it. Seriously. I looked over at my husband at one point, for whom most movies are "yawn" and he looked so clenched up, I started to giggle. He stayed that way through the last third of the movie. Just clenched. I liked the fact that they, for once, didn't seem gratuitous. Every violent scene was VERY vital to the movement of the plot and it is not violence from start to finish, not at all. It's just that the violent scenes are incredibly.....realistic. I kept hearing people in the audience hissing through their teeth, gasping, and making gagging sounds.
Oh and we had NO pre-conceived notions. Didn't even know it was sci-fi. Just didn't want to see anything else, so we wandered in, not even knowing it was a sneak preview.
It seemed a bit long to me (I kept thinking "THIS must be the end" and it wasn't), but that's my only complaint, besides one other tiny thing but it would give away too much.
Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johannsen are the main stars. There's a joke about the president being an idiot. The plot is great, the pacing is fantastic, the acting is good, what's not to like?
Well, Ewan is NOT naked in this movie. You can't have everything, I guess.
