I think I finally got a decent job! Need some advice...
I have worked in the Graphic Arts/Printing indy for years. After being laid off over a year ago and doing time at a truly shit job with a bunch of neocons for 4 months, I got word yesterday that a company that I had applied with wants to hire me. I am currently trying to motivate myself to go into work today, afterwards I go to meet the new boss and firm up salary etc. It's not in my field, but everyone I know in Printing is out of work, and I think it's time to look elsewhere anyway.

One question. Normally health benefits don't kick in until after 90 days. Do you think it is a problem to ask them to add me to their health insurance plan when I'm hired if I offer to pay for it? I just got my insurance back and I really don't want to be without it.

Anyway, think good thoughts...I've been waiting too long for this.

1. I would forget that
they may think you KNOW something is wrong with you and not hire you. If you think you really need health insurance to cover the 90 days extend you insurance from the company you are leaving.

3. Good point.
I hadn't thought about that. Unfortunately in my state it's not mandatory that a company offer to continue coverage if you leave voluntarily.

2. I'm an HR Director

I'm not sure about getting added to the new plan prematurely. That could work. But you could just COBRA your current insurance after you leave for the three months. Same effect, really.

I KNOW you can do the COBRA thing if you're fired, and I'm 99% sure you can do it if you leave your current employer voluntarily. I can check when I get into work, which will be 2 hours from now.

9. You can definitely do COBRA if you quit
a job. It'll cost you, but you'll be covered till your new insurance kicks in.

I know, cause I did that.

4. take the new job 'as is'
don't ask questions until you have a signed contract in place. and don't ask the boss. ask co-workers and HR people... it's a great way to find out about the atmosphere of the place and lets people know that you appreciate their knowledge. i'm pretty sure the HR poster is correct: you can keep your previous insurance coverage for 90 days when you leave a job. that should cover the new job's waiting period.

6. Good advice....
and normally I wouldn't ask. I might add that they are hiring me knowing that I am a mature worker. Also, I am currently being treated for a medical problem (that I wouldn't bring up and doesn't effect my job in any way). I will probably just take the job and stick it out. Either way, I will be in far better financial shape than I am currently! Thanks all...you guys are great.

7. 90 days is standard
unfortunately.

my advice is grin and bear it (unless you are sick and need attention right away).

if you need it now, look into COBRA. its expensive but will get you the care you need.

good luck and CONGRATS!

8. Thanks!
COBRA isn't an option, but the job is a vast improvement. I'm really excited!

10. Why isn't COBRA an option?
I thought it was a Federal plan that everyone who leaves or loses a job is entitled to participate in.

I was under the impression that COBRA only kicks in when you are let go involuntarily. It would be great news if I am wrong. I guess I'll find out in the next couple of days!
