I'm going to be in the Castro neighbourhood in San Fran in a few weeks.
Edited on Mon Jul-11-05 02:39 PM by SmileyBoy
I'm gonna be staying with an old family friend (he's gay, DUH) for several days with my brother on the trip. Today, I finally got the date we'll be leaving. I think it'll be sweet hanging out in a gay environment for a while. And I'm as straight as a five-dollar bill.

This won't be like that episode of "30 Days" where that religious guy lives in Castro, and he's all intimidated and shit. I admit, I might be a little nervous at first being in a predominantly gay neighbourhood, but my family has lots of gay friends (as well as me personally), so it's not like I've been isolated, or anything.

Anyways, I can't wait.

Changed the Frisco. Ya happy??:)

5. That Will be Interesting
Never spent much time in a predominantly gay community. Please post your experiences when you're there or when you get back.

They actually give bus tours into the Castro so nice straight tourists can see the fags in their natural habitat. I am not fucking kidding!

17. My mom flipped one of those bus' off when she visited.
I used to call the cops on them when they drove down 18th Street. Only MUNI busses are allowed in the area. I pissed this bus drive off so bad he slammed his door in my face when I called him on it.

One time a group of "hets" from Fresno in tour bus stopped and this guy looked scared shitless. He was holding his girlfriends had so tight (probably the first time in years) she probably had a bruise. I called over a guy I went to the gym with and we started pointing and laughing at them until the got back in the bus and left.

35. They Used to Give Bus Tours of Haight-Ashbury
in the 60s so suburbanites could see all the dangerous hippies from the safety of a safarimobile. The freaks started parading around the buses carrying mirrors reflecting the tourists' images back at them.

Maybe it's the same people.

40. I loved fucking w/ the tourists.
They always wanted to take pictures of gay couples. I would always pose and just when they were about to take a picture I'd flip 'em off.

10. Rule One
Do NOT EVER call it "Frisco". It's San Francisco, or San Fran or The City. Never ever ever "Frisco".

Have fun :) I lived in the Castro for years and it's pretty cool.

Edited on Mon Jul-11-05 03:22 PM by Moochy
Well when walking on castro, if you drop your keys....

nevermind

Having lived in the bay area all my life, I think I heard that joke in 1st grade. :D <-- it was dumb and homophobic then, still is now.

I wanted to avoid correcting you on "Frisco",
and correct the "San Fran" reference. hehe

"Ess Eff" (S.F.)
or
"the city"
or
"San Francisco"

Thank you , that is all, and enjoy!

15. You'll be surprised by how normal it is.
I think that's the most common reaction I hear. Visitors seem to expect one giant freak show. You may see a few unusual characters but for the most part it's just a cool nbhd in a cool city. Notice I said 'cool' twice in one sentence? Bring layers of clothing because time of day, part of the city, and the whims of the Pacific can conspire to have you sweating in one part of town and freezing in another. Castro is a good base of operations -- have a great time.

39. Yeah, it's bitch.
I moved here from Boston, another great hold-out in the 'malling' of America. Harvard Square has little character anymore and it used to be nearly all locally owned businesses not that long ago. I despise the influx of chains into urban neighborhoods. It's one thing to have Burger King in a tourist area like Fisherman's wharf, but for crying out loud do we need one on EVERY block?

16. Ahhh the Castro...
The only place I know of where you can buy porn in an ice cream parlor, good times. Go to the Castro theater, they have a guy that plays the house organ that rises up out of the stage. It's a great place to see a show, any show.

For those who come to San Francisco
Summertime will be a love-in there
In the streets of San Francisco
Gentle people with flowers in their hair

All across the nation such a strange vibration
People in motion
There's a whole generation with a new explanation
People in motion people in motion

For those who come to San Francisco

'Frisco'. Please DON'T.

By-the-by, you'll have a wonderful time here. People, sights, drinks and food are great. Such a treat to be in a true-blue city!!

Enjoy!
