How hot is it where you live???
It's unbearable where I live in southern Ontario. Us Canadians are used to one, maybe two, heatwaves each summer...lasting maybe a week or so each. But it has been pushing 90 degrees or beyond most every day of the last month and a half. We've had enough!!! AArggh!!! It's humid beyond belief too!!! Any tips for beating the heat from my American compadres??

:dilemma:

90° would be a cold front. And in Texas they say air conditioning is that invention of the devil that lets Yankees live in Texas.

2. Any tips
I'm in central Florida, and we have 90's every day for most of July, all of August, and well into Sept. most years.

Unless your job demands it, avoid the hottest part of the day. Go out and do yard work in the AM or the evening when it's cooler.

If you must work outside, take mucho breaks and get lots of fluid, water and gatorade, not sodas and junk that only compounds thirst.

early in the day or in the evening....I don't know how you folks in the southern states handle the heat....I guess you're just used to it...and to tell the truth, if I had to handle extreme temps for a long time, I'd rather handle the heat over the cold!!!

12. Cold hurts...
My joints ache when it dips below 40.

A lot of people who live here never venture outside. They go from AC in their homes, to work, to shopping, and never get out. And they're white as sheets in the summer in FL! Weird.

15. lots of water. fans blowing on damp skin will cool you down
Edited on Tue Jul-12-05 11:43 PM by yellowdogintexas
fast! I sometimes jump in the shower, then lie down under the ceiling fan for a quick chill down...works for those hot flashes no matter what the weather! LOL

It is 85 degrees at 11:45 pm right now. That is Texas.

I also do my yard work late in the day, from 6:30 or 7 until I run out of daylight. Or early before it gets hot.

Going to the movies is a good way to beat the heat too.

Are you sure you are not in Texas?

Does it cool down at night, though? It most definitely does NOT cool down at night here..
at least when I was growing up without AC in Kentucky, it got cool at night. We all had big exhaust fans to pull air through the house at night and by midnight or so it would be COOL.
Of course we all sneezed all the time from all the pollen and ag dust that came in with those fans....but at least we weren't hot.

17. 85 here, 11:51pm
Im so not enjoying this. And my stupid apartment is built like a frigging shanty with horrible insulation. I paid 290 bucks this month to keep it 78-80 degrees in here... an 1100 sq ft apartment.

I cant wait to get back to the mountains where you can open your windows at night and breath clean crisp air.. and gasp, even have a blanket on you.

21. This month: 99,99,100,100, 98,101,102, 98,96,97,99
The less obvious advice I can give you is this...

1. Walk around with wet hair whenever possible
2. Stay away from highly-paved areas.
3. Shade is your friend, of course, but so is ground vegetation. Since you're lucky enough to have it (down here the soil is dry, hot, sandy, and filled with nasty critters), hunker down in the grass whenever possible.
4. The temperature of your skin is the most important variable once it hits about 100. Light, long-sleeved/legged clothing is actually better than shorts and a t-shirt at that temperature.
5. When driving, first drive with the windows open to cool the car quickly, then always use the "max AC" setting. A pair of white washcloths make the steering wheel bearable. A pair of gloves left under the seat will serve almost as well. Don't worry when the rearview mirror melts off; you can get the adhesive in a big auto parts store. Also, park with the sun at your back.
6. The beach is the worst place to go to try to stay cool. A wooded streambed does the trick much better.

24. New York
it's disgusting here. I never use AC in the eve unless I've been too hot for days. Welp, AC is blaring away until the last second I'm ready to fall asleep. We are getting rain storms Thursday I hope, so that might help a bit.

I'm afraid to complain about the heat anymore. Last time, I felt like a fool because a soldier in Iraq posted and described the 116 degree days they are having and the sand storms and without complaint really. I might be uncomfortable, but I think of him and I feel I shouldn't complain. Many people have it worse.

then I run it to cool down the house, before that I just slog through it, but I have to be able to sleep.
