Man Robbed Twice Within 5 Minutes
<snip>

KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii --A tourist from Connecticut reported he was mugged twice within five minutes while walking Alii Drive, Big Island police said.

Derrick Schull, 50, was walking south on the oceanside-street at 3:25 a.m. Wednesday when a dark-colored sport utility vehicle pulled alongside him. Three men in their 30s got out, forced Schull to give up his wallet and drove away, police said.

Five minutes later, Schull reported that four males, including two juveniles, emerged from some bushes and demanded his wallet. When he told them he had no wallet, two of them started punching and kicking him, police said.

Schull suffered minor injuries and refused medical attention.

2. Same thing happened to me back in the early 90's
...in Marseilles, France. It was partly my fault; I was walking late at night in the worst, junkie-ridden area of the city after a rave-type "squat" party. I was stopped by two knife-wielding Moroccan junkies (no racism intended - they're part of the landscape) and "relieved" of 70 francs (about fifteen bucks, coincidentally, just enough to "fix up" the both of them. They were happy...no problem. Off they went.)

LESS THAN FIVE MINUTES LATER, I was stopped by another pair with the exact same MO as the first two. I had by that time nothing left on me, but unlike this guy in Hawaii who got beat up, these guys - after rifling through my pockets - were genuinely hurt and saddened that I was skint (no money). They even walked with me for a few blocks trying to make friendly touristy conversation, but I couldn't speak Arabic so we parted ways.

Ah, life's great pageant...

5. Alii Drive is not a bad neigborhood.
Some of the most expensive houses on the island are there. These robbers just know an easy mark. Tourist have lots of cash and they will be leaving the island soon which means when they leave the investigation leaves too.
