I should warn you, we don't take kindly to people "thinking" they will do any asswhoopin in Tennessee!
(Actually, I live in Nevada now, and I'm not a hockey fan, but I felt I had to defend Tennessee. :P )

3. As a Nashvillian who doesn't give a tinker's dam about sports... |
|
I say, go ahead, destoy our team...maybe if they lose enough, they'll leave town and we can start allocating more of the stste budget for education instead of wasting it on promoting, paying, and building new coliseums for the Titans/Predators, etc. Every million spent building the Adelphia or the GEC could have been spent providing health care or better schools. Tennessee ranks 48th in the nation for education. Fuck the sports industry.

We just dropped from 39. Not that that is a measure of pride but at least we're no lower. Mississippi is 48.
But hey, my kid went to Nashville public schools and got into MIT so it can't be too bad.

17. Really? I thought we were 48, maybe I got some wrong stats... |
|
Anyways, the substance of the message still stands.
My wife went to high scholl in Fairview and she says ALL of her classmates, bar a dozen or so, had no intention of going to college, and most dropped out in the 10th grade to work retail, service indusrty, or farm jobs full time for the rest of their lives. Your kid and my wife are exceptions, not typical cases.

|
Actually FARville if you live there. That's the one section of Williamson County I would not want to live in but I have only been there a couple of times so am open to hear other opinions about it...

24. Apart from the barefoot, thing, sure! (I'm kidding.) |
|
What I was trying to say is that our public education system here in TN is a shambles, and doesn't adequately psych kids up for learning, or achieving things in their lives. My wife told me that she was never encouraged to do better in school, but she did anyway. Other kids, guidance counselors, and teachers constantly berated her for messing up the grade curve, and tried to steer her away from the art and english courses she planned on taking in college, and towards soccer, and field hockey. Kids don't see a future here, and the emphasis scholastically is to prepare kids for competeitive team sports. All sorts of other school programs get cut, but sports programs get huge amounts of finacial help to grow. Why is that? The message sent is that if you can't cut it in sports, then a life behind the counter at WalMart is your future.
I did not mean to demean the people in the South, just their idiotic Republican leaders.

4. You get two minutes for bad use of dialect |
|
In the dialect you are woefully trying to approximate, the operator "done" is never used with the future tense indicator "gonna."
"Done" always refers to past or progressive actions, never future actions. These are real grammatical rules of real dialects. They cannot be arbitrarily thrown together for effect. (Fuckin' Nucks always get it wrong...;-))

31. Two additional minutes for further incorrect usage |
|
On several fronts. The contraction "I's" (putatively for "I is") does not exist in the dialect. It is at best a mistake made when code switching from the dialect to the hegemonic language, at worst the racist approximation of the dialect by users of the hegemonic language (as in older films, in which the mammy figure says "I's sorry, Massah," etc.).
Second, one of the functions of "me" in the dialect is as first person reflexive, i.e., "myself." So, you might say "I made me some filet mignon," or "I'ma get me some 'a dat." (I made myself some filet mignon; I going to get myself some of that). However, you would never say "I made me a mistake" since that would translate to "I made myself a mistake," which is clearly nonsensical. I should also note that this function of me is yet another improvment of the dialect over Standard Enlgish, since it is a more efficient reflexive, both in its shortening of the word and in its use of the same word for different functions, determined by their relative position in sentences. So, you can still say "He gave me a raise" (as objective pronoun) and "I got me a raise" (as reflective pronoun) - one word, two different function, therefore more efficient.
Has it ever occurred to you that your attempts to approximate this very real dialect with very real grammatical rules is perhaps condescending, and maybe even racist on its face?

I don't really care for all the times I see people use "eh" when they are typing to me. Have a sense of humour about yourself
Not to mention people speak similiar to that around here to, just without the drawl.

28. Yup -- let's hope the Canucks play a skookum game tonight ... |
|
(West coast Chinook Jargon)
As a Canadian who's currently being tutored in "Ebonics", I second Markses on the use of "done" -- the dialect is actually better than standard English for expressing actions in time. (If George W. Bush used it, this would force him to be specific about his tenses ... he is also uncertain about the conditional, which has led to diplomatic incidents where he appeared to be accusing people of breaking treaties.)

And form a strong alliance with our Canadian bretheren, whom we love so dearly! If you don't live within 500 miles of either the Great Lakes you hae no business playing Hockey or being in the grand and glorious seceded North. Unless you are out west or something.

I'll go even further. Hockey players are probably the world's finest pure "athletes." Hockey requires excellent hand-eye coordination, fast-thinking, tremendous conditioning, and exreme strength and toughness. It is a skill-based sport and is faster than anything else. There. I said it. Not to put too fine a point on it, but when the Canucks come to play my beloved Blackhawks, there will be some serious Canadian ass-whipping taking place.

and just admit you're the 51st state.
Actually, it would be quite great if Canada were a state (or if each province were)... national elections would prolly end up with Democratic results more often.

playing for your team?
I'm talking about none other than Jordin Tootoo. First Inuit to play in the League this guy is from the arctic. He's had an amazingly tragic life, but has the heart of a lion and it shows in his playing, he's also well spoken and good humoured.
