It's a case for the Daily Prophet -- perhaps the work of a mischief-maker like Draco Malfoy.
Some copies of the latest Harry Potter book are missing the first chapter, according to Scholastic, publisher of the fantasy series.
A few surfaced in St. Charles, but three teens from Batavia don't mind. They're trying to sell a couple of the flawed books on eBay, hoping they have a hot collectible.
"We figured we might be able to make a little money off of them,'' said Lauren Brunton, 18.
Brunton said she and her friends Kevin Martin and Katherine Kersten -- all 2005 Batavia High School grads -- were at the Meijer store in St. Charles about 12:20 a.m. Saturday to get their copies of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the latest book in J.K. Rowling's series.
When they heard that somebody had found books with a missing chapter, they saw a potential money-making venture.
When they told store staffers they wanted to buy flawed books, "They were like, 'you wantthe misprint?' '' Brunton said.
They picked up a couple of the misprints, along with some complete books. As of Monday evening, they had a high eBay bid of $31 on one misprint, and a bid of $15 on another copy with missing pages. The book was listed Monday on Amazon at $16.99
It's too early to tell whether they have a valuable tome, said Robert Hittel, a book dealer and senior member of the American Society of Appraisers.
"When you're printing 10.8 million copies, it does happen from time to time,'' said Scholastic spokeswoman Sara Sinek.
Customers with flawed copies can obtain a new book, Sinek said, by returning them at the store where they purchased them or by calling (800) SCHOLASTIC.
