These results were done through an exit poll held yesterday during the mayoral election. It really is telling of the culture change in Salt Lake City and shows that the city is starting to shift further and further to the left.
The liberal Democrat, Rocky Anderson, was running for re-election against the moderate Democrat Frank Pignanelli. Anderson won by 8 in one of the closest elections in recent history. Anyway, here are some of the results.
35% of Salt Lakers say they're not of ANY faith.
1% say they're of another religion.
5% say they're less active LDS.
41% say they're active LDS.
10% say they're Protestant.
8% say they're Catholic.
The LDS religion now makes up the minority in Salt Lake City - with all the other faiths becoming the majority. Not only that, the second largest religion AFTER the LDS Faith is that of Agnostic, or no true religion. That surprised me, I'll tell ya' what!16% say they're strong Repulican.
18% say they're other Republican.
15% say they're Independent.
26% say they're other Democrat.
25% say they're strong Democrat.
This shows that Democrats are now the majority in the city, making up 51% of the voting population. Republicans make up only a small 34% of the population. Moreover the Independent vote went to Rocky Anderson, and when comparing past results you clearly see that the Independents tend to vote Democratic.15% say they're strong liberal.
27% say they're moderate liberal.
19% say they're neither.
28% say they're moderate conservative.
10% say they're strong conservative.
This is more telling than just saying what party you belong to. 42% of Salt Lake City believe they're liberal, with 15% of that saying they're STRONG liberal. Only 38% believe they're conservative, with only 10% saying they're strong conservative. 19% are neither liberal OR conservative, but 'swing voters'. What this shows is that Salt Lake City is basically split down the middle in terms of being a moderate conservative and a moderate liberal.Though I can't find it on the site, they did give out Bush's approval rating and said in Salt Lake City it was only around 30-40%. Also, Hillary Clinton would massacre Bush within Salt Lake City limits, something like 70%-20% (10% undecided). So my belief is that the people that are moderate conservative TEND to lean left, as well as the 'neither' population. It's obvious if they were really conservative Bush would have a higher approval rating, and he'd not be losing to Clinton by a huge percentage points.
