Star Trek's Scotty - James Doohan has passed away

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- James Doohan, the burly chief engineer of the Starship Enterprise in the original "Star Trek" TV series and motion pictures who responded to the command "Beam me up, Scotty," died early Wednesday. He was 85.

Doohan died at 5:30 a.m. (1330 GMT) at his Redmond, Washington, home with his wife of 28 years, Wende, at his side, Los Angeles agent and longtime friend Steve Stevens said. The cause of death was pneumonia and Alzheimer's disease, he said.

The Canadian-born Doohan was enjoying a busy career as a character actor when he auditioned for a role as an engineer in a new space adventure on NBC in 1966. A master of dialects from his early years in radio, he tried seven different accents.

5. I met him once when I was a kid...

...and was briefly into Star Trek (mainly the pulp novels). He seemed like a really nice guy.

A lot of war veterans don't like to talk about their experiences...

"James Doohan was a bonafide war hero. An enlisted man who rose to captain in the Royal Canadian Artillery, he was in the frontlines on D-Day, where he was shot seven times, with an eighth bullet lodging in his metal cigarette case. Three bullets shredded the middle finger of his right hand. Eventually, the finger was amputated, which is occasionally noticeable in Star Trek episodes and movies.
Returning from the war, Doohan worked as an actor on Canadian radio, then came to New York, where he studied drama alongside classmates Leslie Nielsen and Tony Randall. He was a regular on the Canadian kids' science fiction series Space Command. His early American television work included episodes of Gunsmoke, Bonanza, Daniel Boone, The FBI, Hazel, The Virginian, and The Outer Limits. He is best known, of course, as the ship's engineer on the original Star Trek."

One of the definitive "Scotty" scenes were Kirk is dressing down his men after a brawl with the Klingons & Kirk asked him what caused the brawl...

I didn't realize he was a D-Day veteran, too.

In a 1998 interview, Doohan was asked if he ever got tired of hearing the line "Beam me up, Scotty."

"I'm not tired of it at all," he replied. "Good gracious, it's been said to me for just about 31 years. It's been said to me at 70 miles an hour across four lanes on the freeway. I hear it from just about everybody. It's been fun."

He frequented conventions, even when his health had deteriorated, and always showed a great appreciation to his fans. He was a great inspiration, not just to trekkies, but to many aspiring engineers for his role in the series.

James Doohan was my all time favorite from the show and I was lucky enough to meet him at a convention. He was incredibly nice and enjoyed all the fame that Star Trek brought him.

He was a lovely man who adored his fans and he will be sorely missed.
