107. Another vote for Border Collies.
I used to work on a sheep farm and we had 9 of them. They're the brightest dogs by miles, you can see it in their eyes, and I think intelligence is more beautiful than an unusually colored coat.

We have an Australian Shepherd with Border Collie coloring but only because our yard wasn't big enough for the real thing.

86. Shelties...sweetest dogs in the world
Edited on Thu Nov-06-03 11:27 AM by RedEarth
Our sheltie(Bounder) just died a few months ago and he was the friendliest, best tempered dog we ever had. Never growled at anyone, very smart and just fun to be around. Like all dogs he was part of the family. Now, we are debating whether to get another sheltie or perhaps try a different breed. However, after Bounder, I am somewhat partial to Shelties.

95. We have had different breeds before getting our sheltie
and he was by far the best dog we ever had. Such a sweet temperment and he was so gentle with our children when they were young. Our son was five when we got our sheltie and out of the blue he said he wanted to name it Bounder. The people we purchased our dog from were breeders of various championship shelties and they were shocked at the name we selected, since he had come from a "distinguished" line of shelties. We had no plans for showing our dog and liked the name our son selected. In fact, it was quite appropriate since he sure could "bound".

Our dog was a Tri-Color and looked like this

108. I knew a dog very much like this
He was a tri-color sheltie who I "dog-sat" for five months. I cried when the time came to give him back. I could let him out in my open yard, leave the door ajar, and he would come in all on his own. He loved to go for rides with me in the car. He was probably the smartest dog I have ever known.:-)

Edited on Wed Nov-05-03 09:35 PM by chaumont58
I think they are nature's best product. I read a good description of a gold retriever once: God was so disappointed with how teenagers turned out, that he created the golden retriever.
Both my dogs succumbed to old age. I consider myself to old to get any more, and I would never find any to equal my beloved Duke and Sydney. In some ways their were like having small children, but for all the small nuisances, I miss them every day, and will until I have no more.

43. Have you considered fostering?
That way, you get the best of both worlds. You get to experience the love and joy of a loving creature, but know that it doesn't have to be a lifetime committment, especially if you are worried about leaving a loving family member behind at the end of your journey on this plane.

I am so glad we decided to do it.

17. Bull Mastiff
He honestly does look like a femaile lion, same coloring and 160 lbs.
Gentle as a lamb, floppy old ears, when he concentrates, great big
wrinkles in his forehead. Maybe not beautiful but absolutely one
of the sweetest guys in the world. They are not well known so little
history. Combination of a bull dog and an English mastiff,
thus the bullmastiff and bred to ward of poachers but will never
bite, just holds them till someone comes to their rescue. He just
turned one and I understand they continue to grow till they're two -
what have we done?

Cuz I have one. :-)

They're cute, sweet-dispositioned, loving, devoted, protective 'sentries' (as opposed to 'guard dogs'), and relatively 'low maintenance'...except for wanting to be pampered and spoiled.

Sorry, I don't have any pictures (or ability to put online). Try googling for the breed. Or, go to a dog show.

My other favourite is the King Charles Cavalier Spaniel.

Both of these dogs are in the small size dog range! (Approximately 20 lbs.)

God, she was something. She understood the important things in life, food and rest. I got her from the Ventura, Ca, animal shelter when she was small enough to fit in one hand. She got much bigger. She was twelve when she died of heart failure last April. I live in the low Sierra Foothills on two acres of pine, cedar, and oak. She and my other dog who died earlier are buried down the hill. They are home, forever. I pass their graves every morning when I go for a walk, and I never fail to say morning.

41. Golden Retrievers!
Edited on Wed Nov-05-03 11:20 PM by TankLV
I have to say, that I've had a lot of different family members, but a few years ago, I just happened to fall in love with my 1st golden - Tank (can you tell) - a big beautiful gentle soul. He passed away a year ago this past August - I'm still devestated. Vet says he was about 18! - I thought he was about 11 or 12 (supposedly got him when he was 4 1/2).

I've had a beagle, cockapoo, mutt, mutt, and more mutt, about 4 goldens and the "benji" dog. Not to mention a few pretty special cats. Each one was my "love of a lifetime" and favorite breed.

All were rescued creatures.

We foster mostly goldens now, but occasionally get a few mixes and non-goldens. The love they give, and the sad stories surrounding their circumstances makes each one a "keeper" - but then we'd be like the lady found with 50 cats and dogs when she died if we could keep them all!

It's so great knowing they are going to a good "forever home" but it hurts a little just the same each time.

I just wish people would think carefully before they get that puppy for christmas. Sometimes it's better NOT to get a dog than to change one's mind and create misery for an innocent loving creature.

AND NEVER, EVER BUY FROM A PET STORE WHEN THERE ARE THOUSANDS KILLED EVERY SINGE DAY IN EVERY COMMUNITY FOR THE CRIME OF BEING THROWN AWAY AND MISTREATED!

If there's ever a taz that should be proudly encouraged, it's taxing all pet stores selling dogs & cats when there are so many in shelters.

Only when there are few remaining loving creatures in the shelters, should pet stores be allowed to operate in a community.

90. billy, i have 3, kodi, aja, & abba and am glad to see other kuvasz owners
there are not many of us around, are there?

when kuvaszok owners say that the breed is unique, it only resonates with people who have been around them for a while.

i have had a variety of breeds but the kuvasz is special. they combine the best in a dog.

61. Wolves
But of the domesticated variety, German shepherds.
They win paws down.
'Cause they look so much like wolves.

Ideally a mix of German and something else,
but with the pronounced shepherd markings.
Mutts rule.
And genetic diversity is way better than
all AKC inbreeding.

Sharing a house with five dogs, all different breeds, each beautiful and unique - it would be like choosing a favorite child. I can say that the one who motivates me to get up and running (while the others would prefer to sleep a little longer) and makes me laugh constantly is Joe Black - a Schipperke. They are curious, crazy, smart, and great protectors.

82. I Have A Big, Ugly Yellow Lab And That's Fine By Me
Actually, he's not an ugly dog. He's a typical looking yellow lab, just on the big side.

But, i will call out "Ugly Boy" and he'll come running. So, he's knows that it means him. He's a dog, so as long as i'm his good human pal, the word is just a signal that i want him. He can't take offense to a word that he knows means affection.

He's a little fat too! I call him Fat Boy as well. But, same situation. I'd like to get him to shed about 7 or 8 pounds, but i can't run him because of the MS, and my wife has an arthritic foot. So, we'll be physically dysfunctional together!

People knock Dalmatians because of Disney. AND because they're deaf, and because they're stupid, and because they take a lot of care, etc., etc.

However, Dalmatians are very muscular and they really can RUN. Watching them run is special. They are beautiful animals.

This is a picture of my beloved Bodhi in the last few days before I let him go recently. He'd been paralyzed from the neck down for months. He stayed present and alert with me most of the time, but each day was harder and harder for him. He's all wrapped up since he couldn't stay warm by himself anymore, but still loved to sit outside and watch it snow.
