Not for guys, who will NEVER get this, but I think Tyne Daly
is the best actress on TV. I remember back in the early 80's, I was in a bad relationship and so a lingering depression, and the only uplift I could look forward to each day was reruns of Cagney and Lacey. To this day, just hearing the theme music from that show cheers me up. And Judging Amy, a mediocre show if you take out Maxine (Tyne), is a never miss for me. I just love this actress, and was wondering if any of the women here share this sentiment.

2. Why do you think men would not apprieciate a really good
character actress?
I think it is a shame she messed up her career with TV. She can act better than that.

3. Judging Amy is not mediocre.
I think it will find its audience if they keep airing it in the afternoon. Tyne Daly has always played strong role models. I bet she's a great person to work with.

4. Tyne Daly is wonderful
and very underappreciated. I remember watching Cagney & Lacey. Still one of the best. cop shows. ever. Not just women's show, but best, period.

Did you see her do Momma Rose in Gypsy? Awe inspiring.

Judging Amy gets better and better. And Tyne's are usually the most touching. That and the indigent county hospital. I miss Richard Crenna. :-(

7. I never saw her as Rose, but I remember the critics
couldn't come up with enough superlatives for her--the best Rose ever, I guess.

I do enjoy Judging Amy--I really enjoy the characters of Donna and Jillian--but Tyne is one of those actors--like Pacino--who always gives you something extraordinary. Great is normal for her, and then at least once or twice a show, she'll do something so special, so beyond what most actors can reach, that it knocks you out, completely unexpected, and it expands the meaning of the scene, or her character--sometimes it's humorous, sometimes tragic, sometimes wise, sometimes loving, but, well, I just love her.

15. Do you remember this line from Cagney and Lacey
To Cagney - "You want to talk about how we fell in case maybe I got breast cancer. Okay. In case maybe I got breast cancer, you go first"

So SO earned that emmy that year.

5. I loved Cagney & Lacey
and I agree with you about the theme song - I still hum it to myself. My friend and I still have a running joke about "Let's play Cagney and Lacey". It all started when we checked into a motel while on a road trip and found the room infested with bugs. The clerk wasn't going to give us our money back and we went into a "good cop/bad cop" routine. We got our money back. Afterwards, we realized we had done a real Cagney and Lacy number with me in the role of the hot headed Cagney. We pulled the routine a few weeks ago after waiting 2 hours for a table at a restaurant and suddenly realized that people who got there after us were getting seated if they bitched enough at the hostess (the restaurant was all non-smoking so we knew it wasn't a smoking preference that was getting some people with the same number in the parties in ahead of us). We had a third friend with us who had no idea what was going on when I looked at Mary and said "Cagney and Lacey?" We got our hands on the manager and got our table.

I also agree with you about Tyne Daly. I only watch "Judging Amy" because of her. I wish they'd do less Amy and more Maxine on the show.

6. I absolutely love Tyne Daly
and I recently learned she's Tim Daly's sister. I was surprised at first, and then I began to see the resemblence.

8. I love her character Maxine Gray...
She is the kind of person that would do anything for anyone just because they need her. I'm taken back to the episode wherE Donna, Amy's quirky Court Clerk gives birth in their living room in a giant pool. Her mother shows up, and rather than helping her daughter give birth, she runs out because she doesn't approve of what she's doing. So, Maxine gets into that pool of water with all her clothes on, including her shoes. Her first thought was Donna and the fact that she needed someone to love her and help her, not that her clothes could get ruined. I admire that character so much, and I remember when the show first started, I was apprehensive about Tyne Daly in that role. But I gave her a chance, and totally fell in love with her. Anyway...I'll stop rambling now.

10. Sorry, but Tyne is a one-note, over-rated actress!
There, I said it! Same character, same emotion. Sorry, but she's not that great. I have nothing against her appearance, because I thing Hollywood is too youth and beauty conscious, but they need to stop giving her Emmys and start giving them to good actress.

Flame me if you will.

And why am I NOT dating Tim Daly??????????

13. Remember her in that Dirty Harry flick?
she was great. She makes a great cop. Cagney & Lacy was one of my favorite shows in the 80's. I know exactly what you mean about hearing the theme song. It's one of those "comfort" shows.

14. In trying to tell Tyne Daly how great she is, I accidently insulted her
I began adoration of Tyne Daly when i was about ten years old and she appeared as a blind woman on a episode of the Rookies in 1972.

She also appeared on other TV shows, and in an amazing TV movie with Frederic Forrest called "Larry"

After that, she kicked ass in Clint Eastwood's the Enforcer - I'll never forget the classic line "You laugh at me you bastard and I'll shoot you where you stand". You wouldn't think it to view her character actress appearance now - but she actually had a very flirty, sexy vibe going on with Clint in that movie.

So I just tried to see everything Tyne was in, two weeks after my son was born I was in the front row of "Gypsie" on Broadway.

Finally, I saw her in an off off Broadway show a few years ago, and I really wanted to tell her how much her work had meant to me and inspired me over the years.

Nervously I waited in line to see her after the performance with othe well wishers. When I finally got up to her, I was soooooo nervous I stammered, and said, I've seen everything you've done, even "Angel Unchained"

My intention was to point out that I admired her so much I had actually seen her in everything. But bringing up that 60's B Biker movie didn't sit too well with Ms. Daly, she got a really disgusted look on her face, made a gesture like she was spitting on her fingers and turned away.

Well, as you can imagine, I just wanted to the floor to open up and swallow me. Here was my big chance to tell my hero how great she was - and i instead insulted her.

Well - I'm still her biggest fan, and hopefully some day will get another shot at this.

17. Oh, HELL, yes.
I lived for that show. I, too, relied on Cagney & Lacey during a tumultous and depressed time. Too, I had the added bonus of full-blown crushes on both women, but hey, what's a young closeted lesbian to do? Gotta have something to think about.

Both she and Sharon Gless -- fabulous. But Tyne is a standout, a class act.

I recently saw an episode of Judging Amy where Maxine's fiance suddenly dies while out of town. She absolutely broke my heart.
