I've gained a new "appreciation" for the depths of human hatred when I read this list.

Apparently, we have invented slurs for Blacks who live in Northern Canada ("Nigloos") and Black people knowledgable about computers. ("Niggabytes").

Surprisingly, Chicom and Dixiecrat are nowhere to be found, even though there are a small number of race-based political slurs.

Hatred is alive and well in the world. The only ones who wouldn't be offended are those who use the slurs.

Nobody here is using the slurs in a derogatory context: They're just being defined. Thus, they might be offensive to some people, but in the way they are presented at the website, they are not intrinsically offensive just because their existance is acknowledged.

When I got to my nationality, I laughed out loud at some of them. I'm not sure of some of the definitions though, since one that referred to my ethnicity had quite a different meaning from what I'm used to.

I also thought this one was humorous: "Rjeindeer-Fjucker" "Norwegians fuck reindeer and they have a lot of silent j's in their name"

No offense intended to Norwegians, I'm sure the vast majority don't have sex with reindeers, but the "j"s got a giggle out of me. That doesn't mean I'd use it, or any of the other ones on the page, but I just thought some of them had some humor to them.

Given the emotional reactions, ranging from mild disgust to outrage over the use of these terms, how many of us own "pop music" recordings that use these and similar terms in the lyrics? Are slurs of any type acceptable if someone considers them "art" (read "music")?

Think about it the next time you're in your record store of choice.

We in America think that race relations are confined to our problems here (black/white), we tend to forget that there are lots of places in the world where people of the same apparent ethenicity (to us) hate each other with passion.

How many of you can tell a Croat from a Serb? Viet from Montgard? Chinese from Korean? Irish Catholic from Irish Protestant from British? Russian from Armenian? Isreali from Palestinian?

Think about that. Take a look beyond your PC American well-off outlook and look deeper into what this site represents.

I find stuff like this fascinating, especially the derogatory terms for Americans and cross-cultural terms (like the British calling the Welsh "Taffies" - a corruption of the pronounciation of Daffyd, not frpm the river Taff as I had guessed; "Welsh" itself is offensive; it is a Saxon {I think} word waelsch meaning "foreigner"; the Welsh name for Wales is Cymru {pronounced Kum-ree}). The Cymric call Brits "Saens" which just means "English" but is still derogatory. The worst Chinses insult in "Turtle egg;" agains for what it implies, not it's literal meaning.

This site got quite a few wrong, but even a pure linguistic study of this field isn't PC.

18. Some are bad, some are not.

Take, for example "Jarhead", which is on the list. Most Marines I know claim that name as a badge of honor.

I routinely call a retired full-bird colonel a "jarhead" (I pronounce it jar-HAY-ed) to his face. He's yet to take umbrage to it, and he takes offense pretty easily.

I don't think it's even that offensive to the English, at whom it is aimed.
