And do we honestly need new nickels? Are people counterfeiting nickels?

How many people are counterfeiting nickels? Isn't there something else we could be spending that money on? Sheesh!

3. It's not a counter-counterfeiting move...it's a comemmorative issue. |
|
...for the bicentennial of two events in US history. Just for some stupid reason 1 year late (2004?).
I do wonder what the cost is, tho. (Bet it's not $87.5 billion.)

4. I wasn't serious about counterfeiting. I was gearing up for this rant. |

Supposedly, the redesign cost $300,000. My guess is that number was rounded down.
This is why Joe Middle America say "I know how to spend my money better than the government." 300,000 for some congressman's pet project so he can tell the voters he fought for them in Washington and got a bill passed. Too bad his damn bill was to authorize the Treasury to make a new nickel. That 300,000 would have
bought some ambulances for some low income, rural counties,
or it could have paid some numbnuts to actually look at the x-ray scanner at a capitol office building and notice toy guns in backpacks while the carrier was still present,
or it could have bought some body armor for some national guardsmen
i could go on and on and on. My point is, when you have the deficit we have now, you have to spend your money better. No one gives a crap whether Lewis and Clark get their due. But people are losing jobs, and they hear the government can't give them a hand, but at least when they're beggin for change, they have some dandy new nickels to look forward to.

6. OK I admit I missed the sarcasm component of your post. |
|
I usually can sense that.
Carry on!
And good points about the $300 large - there are thousands of better ways to have spent that money.

5. Groucho on the economy |
|
Edited on Thu Nov-06-03 02:40 PM by BrotherBuzz
Groucho on the economy (from Animal Crackers):
Roscoe W. Chandler (Louis Sorin): The nickel today is not what it used to be ten years ago. Captain Spaulding (Groucho): Well, I'll go further than that. I'll get off at the depot. The nickel today is not what it was fifteen years ago. Do you know what this country needs today? Chandler: What? Spaudling: A seven cent nickel. Yes siree, we've been using the five-cent nickel in this country since 1492. Now that's pretty near 100 years daylight saving. Now why not give the seven cent nickel a chance? If that works out, next year we can have an eight cent nickel. Think what that would mean? You could go to a newsstand, buy a three cent newspaper, and get the same nickel back again. One nickel carefully used would last a family a life-time. Chandler: Captain Spaulding, I think that is a wonderful idea. Spaulding: You do, eh? Chandler: Yes. Spaudling: Well, then there can't be much to it. Forget about it.

even I am flabergasted @ this WASTE. And how about the $36 million they spent for PR on the new $20 bill? What does AWOL (our monetary savior) make of this?

10. PR is somewhat important for the new 20 |
|
how many old people will freak out when they are given back the colorful 20's after they use a 100 dollar bill to pay for their coffee? I dare to shudder at the possibilities! :P

11. Ulex says it's destabilization |
|
My roomie Ulex, long-time student of mass psychology and the political manipulation thereof, says this is a way to keep people uncertain. The familiar currencies you grew up with are changing, just another reminder that it's not your old America anymore. She says it's either intentional mass-manipulation, or accidental brilliance.
