I just saw the last half of Bowling for Columbine for the first time...

...in criminal justice Administration class. Here are a few thoughts:
1. Michael Moore is a genius.

2. Chuck Heston is a racist bastard and needs to be destroyed. His answer to why we have more gun deaths in this nation as compared to the entire rest of the world is that we are more ethnically diverse than other countries. What a load of bullshit. God, I hate this man.

3. Those kids from Columbine could still die as a result of their wounds from that incident. It takes tremendous courage for those two to get up everyday and simply move around.

4. I must see the entire thing.

5. I loved the cartoon about the history of the US. Hilarious.

6. I'm buying this on dvd as soon as I have the funding.

Anyone else have any thoughts? Or anyone just want to discuss with me how completely hateful all of those idiot republicans are?
I really need to get some of you on my YAhoo messenger so I can chat with someone intelligent about this stuff (My name there is the same here, except it's followed by 621)...there is no one here that I am friends with that is educated about politics AT ALL. but beware, Moore is plays with his facts and manipulates his audience. That is not to say his fundamental theses are incorrect, but a more dispassionate display of the truth would work just as well.

7. It is worth watching the whole movie.

It is informing and entertaining. It is sad and funny. It can make you mad and laugh again.

No too many movies can reach you on so many levels, as well as make you think about some issues you otherwise may not.

5. I'll just make a simple statement

No tit for tat here because I've been through the Moore discussion too many times already.

I'll state no position on Columbine except that Moore could have done a much better job with the film than he did. Do a litle objective research and you'll find that he twisted enough "facts" in Columbine to make it appear almost a mockumentary to anyone who takes the time to do a little research.

He's elevated himself to the anti-Rush in the hot air category in my opinion. If you want to sawy folks, by all means be passionate, but also be completely honest. The devil is in the details. You get cought out on one itemand it defeats your entire argument.

No pointing to specifics. If you want to think for yourself, do the research, THEN flame me if you still feel it's warranted.

10. a great movie, beautifully done...

See the whole movie when you get a chance. It makes a hell of an impact.

I'm always startled that some see this movie as a propaganda piece -- he leaves plenty of mystery in the movie about human nature and about the roots of American violence. The movie, to me, is a collage that tries to look for answers but debunks the easy answers almost as quickly as it offers them.

Heston is a robot, suffering from Alzheimer's, chanting slogans someone put in his head decades before. But I feel Moore is right not to lean on or mention Heston's illness -- because giving a cheap diagnosis doesn't explain why the rest of us are so often enchanted by guns and gun violence. I don't hate Heston so much as I see him as a reminder that we must be careful of what we feed our brains; when we are older, and our powers fail, are we going to be repeating messages of hate or messages of hope?

I find Dick Clark's short appearance chilling. As far as I know, he has no illness to explain why he simply does not care about anyone other than Dick Clark.

11. After I'd screened my DVD copy of "Bowling" ...

(with the interns doing the commentary) -- I decided to donate it to the public library in town. They just started up a DVD collection, and it occurred to me that this way more people could enjoy it.

And once I had the idea, I knew that I couldn't go back on it. (Visions of Moore giving me a noogie if he ever found out ...) For one thing, we know MM's feelings about librarians -- and sure enough, they were pretty glad to get this one.

12. I love the" history of the U.S." cartoon also.

I had a copy of that movie rented from blockbuster for a week and watched it a few times.

I loved the part where he went around the Toronto neighborhoods to see if their front doors were unlocked. (Please tell me that's not one of the doctored things in his film!) The cartoon history of the US is laugh-out-loud funny. Moore really brings to our attention how our media distorts the news.

however, you'd have to be really gullible to believe that canada has no ghettos. i know many of the statistics in the film are not quite truthful, the right wing has been doing it for years, so i don't think it's such a big deal. i don't really consider it a documentary anyway.
