13. August in Houston is just about the equivalent of hell.
Downtown in the summer is like some futuristic movie setting... no one on the sidewalks, everyone underground.

18. Some restaurants & bars are bringing life back downtown.
Street construction, the Big Flood & the building of light rail impeded progress, but there's a bit of action after hours.

There's no significant shopping downtown. Anybody there during the day is smart to stay underground. (Unless they've ridden Metro from another area for lunch; Treebeard's beans & rice are legendary.)

7. Visit Space Center Houston and...
have dinner at the Kemah Waterfront.

Make sure you eat several meals at any of the Pappas restaurants..."Pappadeaux" and "Pappasitos" are both great.

Houston is one of the best restaurant cities in the country, so plan on eating a lot. You know.....when in Rome and all that.

14. If you have the time.....
Check out the Lord of the Rings show at our Museum of Natural Science. www.hmns.org/ Props, costumes & weapons all the way from New Zealand! Even if you skip that show, you can drop by to see dinosaurs, etc.

If you're interested in art, the Museum of Fine Arts has a big collection. The Menil has a small, exquisite collection. The Art Car Museum has a small, weird collection.

Lots of good places to eat. For Mexican food: Ninfa's on Navigation, Pico's, Tila's & Hugo's. (The latter 2 are high class--but high class Mexican food is cheaper than high class European food.)

Where will you be staying? Will you have a car? It's a big city with a diverse population. Any specific interests?

You will notice that my suggestions are all INSIDE, where it's air conditioned.

22. Enjoy our great city!
Houston is a wonderful town. We've very diverse - and have a Democrat for a mayor. We're not all Repugs, despite what you might think.

But it's hotter than hell in August here - so be prepared.

Fun things to do in August - baseball, the beach, NASA, Hermann Park for golf, zoo, easy access to museums (Fine Arts, Science, Holocaust, Medical).

What sort of things do you like to do?
