I will never comment about Cuba again.
Just got into a massive flame-war over Castro. I will never ever raise that subject again. Clearly my view was opposed by the vast majority of DUers. To help me avoid future embarassment, are there any other subjects that just cause flame-wars that I should avoid. The IRA Terrorists or Freedom Fighters thing was a good example.

6. I dont think so
I think this board just have a bunch of people who doesnt look at it black and white.

Alot of cuban americans just see Castro as totally evil and everything will be great once hes gone..

Now I agree hes a dictator and he shoudl be removed and Cuba should be a democracy.. BUT they forget how Cuba was BEFORE Castro came.

There are shades of grey

7. Yeah, I waded right in there against Castro.
I grew up in Scotland. I never realized the strength of support he has from the North American Left. I'm just going to duck that argument like the coward I am.

11. Strong support by a few

There are many others frustrated by US policy toward Cuba. The policies seem to make little sense, in that they have not resulted in Castro's overthrow for 50 years. It's time to try something different, but there's too high a political cost at home for trying. But don't mistake this for support of Castro. Putting our support with Batista was even more deplorable than our Castro policies.

15. Thanks... this is where I stand too.
Don't support Castro though I agree with what he did when he liberated Cuba from US colonialism.

Think current US policy is idiotic.

8. Exactly, the previous gov't was a gang of thugs
And generally revolutions don't happen where things are going well.

The wackos in S. Florida are a bunch of ageing gangsters who refuse to take any responsibility for their actions.
A pox on both them AND Castro!!!

14. Black and White and Blue all over
If you start a topic on Cuba. No things are not black and white.

The duplicity and hypocrisy of the hard-line stance of the US government to Cuba as opposed to our constant love affair with China and its manufacturing sweat shops that makes our Corporations fat with profit is sickening.

However, all of this overshadows a simple point, Cuba is not some socialist nirvana. Not going into some rant about the USA is perfect or even better in some ways either. However, the Cuban government is oppresive and it is a Oligarchy at best and a dictatorship at worst. There is no serious since of political freedom in the country. If the far left wants a socialist poster child there has to be some socialist European run democratic state that can pose as a much better example.

But nooooo! I have heard people make some outrageous excuses for the Cuban government that sound like excuses made of Communism back before the horrors of Stalinism were completely apparent or the excuses of the repukes to our behavior in our unilateralism today. The love affair some in the far left seem to have with Cuba defies logic in my opinion.

You can talk about beer or wine of food or kitties. Butterflies are nice too. Oh, and you can hate the Bush people and freepers.( anyone who flames you on those topics is a covert freeper) Or you can just decide to talk about whatever you want and to hell with all the jerks who don't like it. :beer
