What was your first concert?
I saw the Beach Boys with my parents at a County Fair when I was 6 or 7, but that's not what I meant. What was the first concert you went to by yourself (i.e. without parents...not without friends, but that counts too if it's the case).

Mine was Anthrax and Iron Maiden at the Meadowlands, 1990. I wasn't even a big fan of Maiden, I was a huge fan of Anthrax. I saw them again with Alice in Chains, Slayer and Megadeth (Clash of the Titans) at Madison Square Garden later in the year. Flavor Flav and Chuck D did Bring Da Noize with Anthrax for the finale. It was great.

I dragged my uncle there.

First concert with no family? Duran Duran, Ahoy Arena, Rotterdam. May, 1987.

18. The Bee Gees, 1979
I was ten years old, and they were at the height of their disco power. They wore white polyester leisure suits and had a 40+-piece orchestra. Hell of a show for a 10-year-old!

My first "solo" concert (where I went without parental supervision) was Black Sabbath, on the "Born Again" tour in 1982. It was the one album/tour they did with Ian Gillan (Deep Purple's singer). Queit Riot opened for them.

Believe it or not Sab's stage set was STONEHENGE. This was a year or two before Spinal Tap. And yes, it looked really cool!

48. The Who - 1974

At least I think it was '74, maybe it was '73. I was 13 and I went with my cousin to the show. Totally unbelievable lasershow (for the time) and I got to hear all their music (I had only been familiar with Tommy until then).

That was my first experience with 'contact high' which basically 'second hand smoke'.

My parents were so clueless to let me go to the who (general admission).

So we've been to a lot of concerts together that I would've otherwise went to alone.

Believe it or not, Black Oak Arkansas, with Ruby Starr. Hillbilly metal. I still like the band to this day, although quite frankly, I don't even know if they exist anymore. First one ever, my dad took me to see Mason Proffit. In reality, he kinda took himself, he just wanted company, so the college kids wouldn't think he was weird. They didn't and a good time was had by all.

71. Olatunji and his Drums of Passion, then Pete Seegar, then Luther Allison
all because I grew up in a college town and we went to whatever was playing. Late 60s.

all of these concerts were great.

I started listening to R&B because of Allison; he was a great bluesman, but did amazing send-ups of R&B classics during his encore, like "Knock on Wood" and "Who's making Love To Your Old Lady". He converted me.

Pete Seeger was oversold, and they put up folding chairs onstage. I sat three feet away from him while he performed, and could read the writing on his banjo about how "this machine kills fascists" ...

Olatunji had thirteen drummers, nothing else for two hous, and was fabulous. Santana's "Jingo Rock" is was, er, borrowed from Olatunji's "Jingo La Ba", a couple of years later.

later did Woodstock. A few more people were there.

No offense, but I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between Anthrax and Iron Maiden.:hide:

After that, my friends dragged me to a Murray the K rock and roll show at the Brooklyn Paramount. The act I remember best was the Isley Brothers, "Shout" and "Twist and Shout"

all on the same bill. we walked home from gradeschool crossing the St. Louis U. campus and at the gymnasium saw the poster for Taj Mahal (we had "The Nat'chul Bues" album at home and LOVED it!) and asked someone if we helped set up chairs idf we could stay for the show and they said- "sure c'mon in"...

the we mentioned above are me and my little brother.

Second concert was The Who/Blues Magoos/Herman's Hermits... The Who blew 'em off the stage.
