5. But what's worse?
Living life hoping for love, and it not existing?

Or knowing that it doesnt exist....and making plans accordingly?

15. Don't mess with me, Taverner
I'm confused enough as it is! :)

I'd rather have hope and it not existing. At least I would be oblivious to it then. Knowing it doesn't exist would suck all the will out of me. My plans would be to sit around and be lazier then I already am. :)

10. love, like for your kids?
or love, like for a romantic partner?

I think we care for those close to us. we want to protect and nurture them and wish them happiness and enjoy being with them. I guess this is "love."

As for romantic love? Bullshit. It's a lie and a sham. There is attraction and pleasant physical contact and sex. "Love" is a bunch of advertising gobbledygook that just makes it harder to maintain a relationship.

11. The definition of "love"..........
is nebulous, at best. What constitutes love for one would not for another.
I believe love is the most irrational of emotions. So, I guess I believe in love by that definition alone. I don't think I share the "normal" person's concept of love though.

Seriously, I've read(no link) that brain scans of people who are in love show a resemblance to those with a mental illness.

Then I fell in love and all of my love cynicism went out the window.
All I can do now is enjoy it and hope that I never lose it.

19. Whether I believe makes no difference
Love exists independently of my belief.

Many experience it, therefore it exists. An individual may not personally experience it, but that doesn't lessen it's impact on those that have. It clearly exists.

It isn't a belief, it is an experience. I've experienced it, I still experience it.

Love is actually a vast subject, and the love between a man and a woman is only part of it. There are many types of love, in many types of relationships. It is essential to life.

26. You have said it perfectly, kwassa!
Have you ever read "The Art of Loving" by Erich Fromm? He talks about all the different sorts of love; it's fascinating. This book allowed me to fall in love with my husband; we are still married after forty years...

Yes, love exists...There would be no human life without it.

Thank you for your most excellent post!

33. Thanks, Peggy, I think love is the meaning of life
There is no other point or purpose. All the striving is meaningless, really. Love is the creative impulse, the source, the glue that brings us together.

If there is a God, then God is love. There is no greater meaning.

22. Love don't make things nice - it ruins everything. It breaks your heart...
One of my favorite speeches from "Moonstruck":

"Loretta, I love you. Not like they told you love is, and I didn't know this either, but love don't make things nice - it ruins everything.
It breaks your heart. It makes things a mess.

We aren't here to make things perfect.
The snowflakes are perfect. The stars are perfect. Not us. Not us!

We are here to ruin ourselves and to break our hearts and love the wrong people and *die*. The storybooks are *bullshit*.

Now I want you to come upstairs with me and *get* in my bed!"

36. Queensryche song
I awoke on impact
Under surveillence of the camera eye
Searching high and low
The criminal mind found at the scene of the crime
Handcuffed and blind, I didn't do it
she said she loved me
I guess I never knew
But do we ever, ever really know?
She said she'd meet me on the other side
But I knew right then, I'd never find her
CHORUS
I don't believe in love
I never have, I never will
I don't believe in love
It's never worth the pain that you feel
No more nightmares, I've seen them all
Frome daay I was born, they've haunted my every move
Every open hand's there to push and shove
No tie for love, it doesn't matter
She made a difference
I guess she had a way
Of making every night seem bright as day
Now I walk in sahdows, never see th light
She must have lied 'cause she never said goodbye
CHORUS
I don't believe in love
I'll just pretend she never was real
I don't believe in love
I need to forget her face, I see it still
No chance for contact
There's no raison d'etre
My only hope is one day I'll forget
The pain of knowing what can never be
With or without love it's all the same to me
CHORUS

I don't think only undying or neverending love is valid...love has many colours - some fade, some don't - but they're all important. They shape who we are.

46. I believe in a thing called love!
Can't explain all the feelings that you're making me feel
My heart's in overdrive and you're behind the steering wheel

Touching you, touching me
touching you, god you're touching me

I believe in a thing called love
Just listen to the rhythm of my heart
There's a chance we could make it now
We'll be rocking 'til the sun goes down
I believe in a thing called love
Ooh!

I wanna kiss you every minute, every hour, every day
You got me in a spin but everythin' is A.OK!

Touching you, touching me
touching you, god you're touching me

I believe in a thing called love
Just listen to the rhythm of my heart
There's a chance we could make it now
We'll be rocking 'til the sun goes down
I believe in a thing called love
Ooh! Guitar!

Touching you, touching me
touching you, god you're touching me

I believe in a thing called love
Just listen to the rhythm of my heart
There's a chance we could make it now
We'll be rocking 'til the sun goes down
I believe in a thing called love
Ooh!

CHORUS:

Baby don't hurt me

Baby don't hurt me
Don't hurt me

What is love
Yeah
Oh I don't know
why you're not fair
I give you my love
but you don't care
So what is right
and what is wrong
gimme a sign
(chorus x2)
uoh oh...
Oh I don't know
what can I do
what else can I say
it's up to you
I know we're one
just me and you
I can't go on
(chorus x2)
uoh oh..
What is love
What is love
What is love
Baby don't hurt me
Don't hurt me
no more
Don't hurt me
Don't hurt me
I want no other
No other love
This is your life
our time
When we are together
I need you forever
Is it love
(chorus x2)
uoh oh..
(chorus x2)
Baby don't hurt me
Don't hurt me
no more
Baby don't hurt me
Don't hurt me
no more
Baby don't hurt me

50. Never one to simply take the yes or no,
black or white, good or evil argument...

I do believe that the abstraction we call love has substance. I believe it exists and has texture in our lives.

But I don't believe it exists in quite the classic Disney movie iteration, and I don't believe that everyone who declares themself in love is indeed in love. Sociological, and hormonal factors, and emotional dysfunction often influence the labels we put on our relationships.

I'm not certain that love is intended as a lifelong oath of commitment. I believe we can hope for it, use it as a goal and even work toward that end. Yet once a love affair no longer has any emotional reward but it's own constancy, keeping it together is perhaps like living with a corpse.

I dunno. I'm in a reflective mood.
