As an almost 40 year old punk from "back in the day" it's a truly sorry state. Pits used to be huge, and full of people wanting some good honest tusseling... sometime in the mid 90's it turned into nothing but fights.. I gave up. Take this as you will from an old fart, but I've seen the best, and as soon as the media got hold of the punk/ HC scene, it all went to hell. Apologies to all you young-uns, but you missed the heyday...

I may be only 28, but I caught the tail end of good "mosh life."

Yeah, there were always guys in the pit who were in serious need of an ass-kicking; but for the most part, there was a sense of community. When I fell down and got my eye stepped on by someone in cowboy boots, someone else was there to help me up.

Around '93 or '94 (once you started seeing kids moshing in EVERY video on MTV), the pit filled up with a bunch of morans looking to fight every man and grope every woman in the pit.

Oh yes, and then there are the people who keep the pit going during slow songs...

The best shows are the smaller ones... although there were about 200 kids there for that one...

Nothing like trying to crowdsurf at a venue with a low ceiling.

Last moshpit I was in was Queens of the Stone age at my home town of Chelmsford's V2003 festival.

16. Bah - mosh pits are ruined by the Bizkit generation

Pits today are usually full of rip-roaring assholes who think a mosh pit is an excuse to get violent and hurt others.

An excellent example is the thick-browed cretins who frequent Limp Bizkit shows and the like.



Nobody knows how to do it correctly.

Everyone who knew how to correctly behave in a pit is too old to be in one now.


I'd print out the Unwritten Rules of Mosh Pit Behaviour, but it'd be an exercise in futility.
