Poll question: Can you parallel park?
Due to the shame that can often accompany this condition, here's an anonymous poll. Feel free to share your anxiety or pride if you like.

1. I like to consider myself...
a parallel-parking ninja. My wife disagrees (about the parallel-parking part).

2. I suppose yes
but it's very rare for me to get it in one motion. There is usually a little bit of shuffling forwards and backwards to get it close enough to the kerb. Does that disqualify me?

5. I have street parking, so I have to
I can get my car into a spot with a foot of extra space. (Someone else's car? Maybe not. But mine's small and easy to maneuver.)

Oddly, I can't parallel park worth a damn on the left side (i.e. on a one-way street).

I couldn't parallel park at all, though, until I was in college and had a car parked on the streets of Beloit. I would at first try to find spaces adjacent to driveways and crosswalks, to give myself a little more room, and Hedges tried to teach me and eventually I just figured it out. (I can parallel park better than he can these days.)

It's all about practice, and I lived for three years in an apartment building with no parking lot - onstreet parking only.

9. I can, but it's easier when a don't have a man in the car
Men always seem to want to give me instructions when I try to parallel park - crap like TURN TURN CUT CUT TURN CUT CUT. IT's like "STFU - I know what I'm doing". I got to the point that I usually just kick whatever man is in the car out of the car and then I pull right in

A 4 hour parallel parking lessen with my dad, in the rain.

"AGAIN!" "AGAIN!" "AGAIN!" (You get the idea - did I mention my dad had been a Drill Sargent?)

This is back in the day when cars, were cars too. Damn-straight I can parallel park.

43. Not to save my life
Only thing I failed on my driver's test, and all I had to do was parallel park behind a car (without any other cars behind that one).

Fuck it, I just can't do it.

I did it once, with two friends helping, and about 20 back and forths, when I was in my late 20s, and i said "fuck it, never again".

And I've never tried it since.

47. oh yes. There once was I time when I could not, but necessity
taught me how to do it and do it well.

Stick shift, no problem
Left side of the street vs right side of the street, no problem.

My husband once told our daughter that if he ever knew anyone who could park anything on a dime, it was me. I considered that a very high compliment.
