on edit-- well, I guess it depends on whether you're normalizing your lifespan against a dog's or vice-versa. I always think about it this way, i.e. a 10 year old dog is equivalent to a 70 year old human. OTOH, a 70 year old human is equivalent to a 10 year old dog.

Dogs reach adulthood in their first couple of years and, the older that they get, the less each year counts. As the companion of seven beloved dogs in my life, two of whom lived past 18, I consider myself to be somewhat knowledgeable on the subject, especially since I hate to see my guys get older.:shrug:

Here's a more accurate way of calculating this:

Note: It is a common belief that 1 human year is equal to 7 dog years. That is not very accurate, since dogs reach adulthood within the first couple of years. The formula used above is from a canine expert and is a bit more accurate. (as accurate as one can judge these things)

The formula is: 10.5 dog years per human year for the first 2 years, then 4 dog years per human year for each year after.
