I know they went undefeated one year, but Alabama won the NC.

I believe Penn State went undefeated in 1994 but didn't win the national championship.

I believe ASU was not in the Pac-10 - they were in a "minor" conference, and that hurt them.
As for BYU, I think they went undefeated in early 1980's and didn't win - maybe when McMahon was there? I know they did win it in 1984 - this might have been 1982 or 1983.
