does anyone like the Doors music but finds Jim Morrison's lyrics lame?
I do.
I think Jim Morrison is one of the most overrated lyricists in rock. Most of his lyrics are lame acid-poetry that mean little or nothing. "the Blue bus....is calling us" is just one shining example of his lame attempts at existentialism :eyes:

And despite the fact that I think Ray Manzarek is a genius on the organ, I find him to be a completely pretentious art snob. I read his book and he is undoubtedly one of the most annoying authors I have ever read. His annoying hippy/ art school narrative is enough to induce vomiting :puke:

So, anyone agree with me?
The Doors music---much of it rocks. Their attempts to be culturally relevant and mind blowing---lame.

1. I like neither the music nor the lyrics.
Both, imo, suck.

Flame away.

4. thats cool with me
I like the sound of alot of their stuff, particularly the harder, bluesier rocker stuff, like "5 to 1" or "Wild Child"

much of the lyrics are lame, with an occasional one liner that is cool---like "No one here gets out alive"

3. he's a crappy singer too
and I agree 100% about the music. JM certainly didn't add anything to it

5. I agree with you.
I really don't think they were great lyrically. But music's not that bad.

6. I like the Doors.
I think many of his lyrics are as good as any in rock history. His singing is fantastic. But it's all a matter of taste. Not everyone is going to like the same things. I would note that the group didn't amount to much after Jim passed away.

7. Well to quote an old friend regarding Jim Morrison's lyrics
"What the hell is he talking about?" :-)

But I love the Doors music and Jim Morrison's lyrics.

8. Well, listen to their post-Morrison albums.
Edited on Mon Aug-01-05 05:27 PM by Fenris
Morrison may be overrated, but without him, the band really, really sucked.

Manzarek gets too much credit, I think. Aside from being a great organist.

14. I never even bothered to listen
and i like jim's voice, his baritone. The Doors put out some great stuff (and some uber-shitty stuff)

16. Yeah, the post-Morrison stuff would qualify as über-shitty.
I mean, there are just some musicians who only work well in a specific combination of other musicians. Take one out of the equation and you really suck.

I think it's funny that Manzarek and Krieger are touring with that guy from the Cult as their Morrison replacement. That's just sad. :D

19. Manzarek is among the most obnoxious weiners
in rock. I read his book "light My fire", and it is so incredibly pretentious, so full of hippy/60s cliche and all kinds of mystical bullshit, as well as non sequitir rants about Oliver Stone, the 'establishment' and the glory of LSD that come out of nowhere and go on for pages before he gets back to the narrative. It is among the worst written books i have ever read

11. Just terrible. I can't see how people like them.
You know that it would be untrue
You know that I would be a liar
If I was to say to you
Girl, we couldn’t get much higher
Come on baby, light my fire
Come on baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire

Time to hesitate is through
No time to wallow in the mire
Try now we can only lose
And our love become a funeral pyre

Come on baby, light my fire
Come on baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire

Aouh, come on!
Come on, babe!

Yeah! come on!
Come on!

Woaouh! yeah!

It was the greatest night of my life.
Although I still had not found a wife
I had my friends
Right there beside me.
We were close together.
We tripped the wall, we scaled the graveyard
Ancient shapes were all around us.
The wet dew felt fresh beside the fog.
Two made love in an ancient spot
One chased a rabbit into the dark
A girl got drunk and balled the dead
And I gave empty sermons to my head.
Cemetary, cool and quiet
Hate to leave your sacred lay
Dread the milky coming of the day.

Ah, ah, ah, ah!
Ah, ah, ah, ah!
Ah, ah, ah, ah!
Ah, ah, ah, ah!
Ah, ah, ah, ah!
Ah, ah, ah, ah!
Ah, ah, ah, ah!
Aah, aah, aah, aah, aah
Aah, aah, aah, aaah!

Time to hesitate is through
No time to wallow in the mire
Try now we can only lose
And our love become a funeral pyre

Come on baby, light my fire
Come on baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire

Know that it would be untrue
You know that I would be a liar
If I was to say to you
Girl, we couldn’t get much higher

Come on baby, light my fire
Come on baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire
Try to set the night on fire
Try to set the night on fire
Try to set the night on fire!

All right, all right!
All right!

12. Robbie kreiger wrote that one
Edited on Mon Aug-01-05 05:37 PM by Zuni
sorry, those aren't Jim's lyrics (at least most of them aren't)

and the really cool part of the song is the insturmental jam...with Manzarek and Kreiger playing tight ass solos over a vamp of just Am--Bm

20. "Peace Frog" is cool
So is "Ship of Fools". When he gets more direct, like the bluesmen did, Morrison is great. He was much better live when he incited the audience, and could mock himself, which is proof he was the last person to take himself too seriously.

One of those guys in highschool that took his own cheesy lyrics too seriously. His poems were shit.

"A child's fragile, eggshell mind"

Talk about laboured, anxt worthy of highschool garbage.

28. I totally agree.
I really like Manzarek's playing, the sort of shuffly old-school drums and the appealingly creepy guitar. I like the blues-derived stuff and the way some of the music veers into a sort of campy, haunted house sound. Unfortunately, Morrison was largely a pretentious dickhead. I haven't read anything by Manzarek. Apparently, I have saved myself the trouble.
