What is your art?
I do a lot (or did before I went back to school) of community theatre. I like to do everything: act, direct, build sets, lighting. I think I'm good at what I do, and I enjoy it. I don't get paid for 95% of what I do. I do it for the love of theatre.

What is your art?

The first person who says Garfunkel gets :spank:

A little photography, but I don't know enough to practice it as art.

10. My problem is lack of focus (no pun intended).
It's hard for me to stick to one thing. My brain is all over the map. I think anyone can practice an art and become reasonably proficient. On that I agree.

Mostly fiction, but also essays and articles. Writing is my major so I'd better be good at it, right?

I'm also an extremely amateur photographer. And when I say amateur, I mean I just started in April, so I'm about as amateur as it gets.

This is probably difficult to answer in a quick, messageboard type way, but...
How do you go about making that kind of art? I've seen other examples in the past, and I've always been curious. Now that I have such an artist cornered, so to speak, my curiousity is getting the better of me. :)

Do you use photos and then manipulate those?

Use that to trace an outline. Then I add colour and shading and other elements as I see fit.

22. What I like and what I do are two different things
I love television. When I worked in a studio for 8+ years in L.A., my favorite jobs were with the TV group. I am a bit of a TV expert with extensive knowledge of TV, most especially the late 50s, the 60s through the 90s.

As for what I do, I write and photograph. I've been writing poetry since I was in about 3rd grade, with the usual childish innocence in my writing back then. I've written two novels, one as a hobby, and the other which I would like to market and get published some day. The only writing, however, I've done lately has been in long posts on boards like DU, which, at the very least, still keeps me going.

I like doing all of those things but lately I can't seem to finish anything. I lose my inspriation somehow and it fizzles out. Pretty lame.

I might try combining all of those things into a graphic novel. Perhaps it will help.

Yes, I have way more photos that I haven't put up or don't have, given away, etc. I use a Canon AE-1. I developed + printed all the darkroom photos (and the film from which they came) personally. The only darkroom access I've had was my past two years in high school, and I'll have access at college, but I'm hoping to build a darkroom in my house for when I'm not at school.

Actually I kind of alternate. I threw some pot 2 years ago, and will again when I get the itch, but clay removes the calluses on my fingers, so I usually only play guitar. Not that I'm any good, but it's fun. I threw pots all through school, but didn't get a gitbox 'til I was 30.

91. Working on it
As much as I'd like to achieve success now I felt that the "twist" in Saw wasn't as shocking because it was unjustified by the rest of the film. In order for a "twist" to work for me you have to be able to go back and watch the movie or just think about it afterwards and have the twist make sense. IMHO, Saw didn't achieve this.

a number of really evil DUers have my tie dyes (cat woman, NYY fan, ulysses, scgop is evil, even mike malloy.... and his "very attractive" wife). from 2000 to 2005, i did about 1,500 of them. i taught a class in how to do them in the local high school.... and ran into a guy wearing one at the food lion last week who said his wife bought it for him last year... i sell them at the pet grooming store and sporting goods outlet in town so that is where she must have bought it.

it was pretty funny, i was walking down an aisle at food lion and around the corner came the guy wearing the shirt. i recognized it immediately as one of mine because of the patterns and it had a breast pocket (my signature style).

55. I draw & write my own comics.
My favorite artists are Jack Kirby, Dick Sprang & Dick Ayers.

I've been building on the same character since I was about 15- for 18 years or so.

I really need someone to help me with the inks though-never quite perfected it.

I bang out country songs plus 50s & 60s rock & roll on my gee-tarr from time to time as well.

Mostly I work & politic.

A lot of the comics I read are drawn and inked by different people...and then colored by different people as well...Jhonen Vasquez does his own though, and so does Roman Dirge, (I think.) Got any links, I'd love to see some of your stuff.

89. When I get a scanner, I plan to post episodes in the DU Comics Room.
I have yet to "computerize" anything yet- but I'd love to start doing the colors by computer in order to simulate the dot matrix look & avoid hand lettering...I need a Wacom pad I suppose...

If you like old DC & silver age Marvel, then you may like my stuff- I hope to have somthing to present soon enough...

56. Music and Words...
Here's a recent lyric...

THEY GOT A JOB

don't talk back to your teevee set
the corporate sponsors are listening
they know who you are from the internet
and offer a city that's glistening
and don't ever doubt for a minute
they know what's good for you
does it make you feel secure
make you feel secure
when Archer Daniels Midland says
we grow enough food to feed the world

never take for granted what they shove in your face
and don't get sick unless you're able to pay
cause the health care industry has congress in it's pocket
you trust a politician who can't pronounce so-cial sec-ur-i-ty

he's got a job and you don't
he'll eat tonight and you won't

we sail around the world in front of teevee sets
seeing all sorts of people living life without regrets
and our brains will burn from things that haven't even happened yet
then we close our eyes.... and we close our minds....

They got a job and we don't
they'll eat tonight and we won't

a battle at the dinner table; daddy is drunk
out of work and hopeless in a desperate funk
momma weeps into her hands wondering what she ever thunk
as the television drones on with it's commercials in the corner

106. Thanks, glad you liked them
The main program I use is Povray, an open source raytracer. I'm probably showing my true geek colors by using it because there's no modeler like there is in the so-called pro software like 3DS Max or Lightwave - it's all pretty much source code. There are some free modelers, but I never could quite get the hang of them. I also use Poser (the only non-free software I use) for models of people (or puppets) and the Gimp for things like adding my sig & manipulating some of the textures before rendering. I always freely give out the source code for my pics to anyone who wants (at least the parts I created - I can't legally give out the source code for the puppets in the 2nd pic since they are Poser models, though I can release the code for all the other objects in the pic).

I used to be a regular contestant at the IRTC (the 2nd pic took 3rd place in Dec 2003) which disallows any post work except for resizing or adding a sig, so usually my pics are usually the direct output from the renderer.

As for my computer - it's nothing special, though I did just upgrade from an 1.6 GHz Athlon XP to a 2.4 GHz Athlon 64. B-)

59. I play guitar and clarinet....
Edited on Wed Aug-03-05 04:49 AM by cleofus1
here's me in the band in 1976...I also do a lot of writing, mostly copy. But sometimes autobiographical essays.

I used to be a Band Geek

I used to be a Band Geek. I'm not ashamed to admit it...In fact I'm proud. It was a hard row to hoe, that I will admit.

I remember in our freshmen year we sucked big time! The band went to a parade and scored like in the 60's...the judges told us to please not come back until we learned to play our instruments! Talk about humiliation!

Later that year during concert season we were practicing and we just couldn't get this one passage right...though we tried and tried. Finally Ms. Briant, our fearless band director, broke down and started crying. She didn't leave the conductors stand, she just sat there tears rolling down her pale cheeks, finally she said softly, "I have given up everything to be here...". She paused and began to regain her composure...she looked up her eyes red, mascara beginning to run...she spoke louder this time, "every day I give you guys everything I have...everything!....and all I ask is that you try your best too...I don't have any life but this band...I don't even have a family anymore...just you...just you!" She then left the podium and walked to her office.

Her outburst was so unexpected and so powerful. Personally I was moved beyond words. I glanced around the room and looked into the eyes of my fellow band mates and realized that the majority of us would probably have marched over the edge off a cliff for her. Maybe a core group of us understood that she wasn't there just to pick up a paycheck....she cared, and not just a little, she cared with all her heart.

That was 1972, by 1976 (our senior year) we were competing and winning..scoring consistently in the 90's and being praised by judges for our musicianship...And every step of the way, every evolution of our craft, every epiphany of musical life was guided by this wonderful lady. Every now and then I still break out the old b flat clarinet and toot out a few tunes. When I play I imagine myself once again, wearing white shoes and a big furry hat. I daydream about whistles piping out in the cold misty morning signaling me. I begin marching...and as the drums beat in syncopated rhythm I bring my clarinet to my mouth in a stylized ceremony and I begin to play.

64. Audience
Humm, it would have to be appreciation and curiosity of all art.

I can not act, sing, play an instrument, draw, sculpt, write well...a not talent gal.

BUT I will cry during opera/symphony, eat a painting or sculpture with my eyes, hold my breath at the beauty of nature, and dance with abandon when the music plays.

So my art is being the audience, so to speak.

129. I have always wanted to be a comic book artist
way back in the 60's, when Jack Kirby left Marvel to come back home to DC.....

And then, I discovered that Sex and Guitars went together a whole lot better than sex and comic book art, at least it did in the 70's, so here I am....

Still sexless in my 40's but I can play a mean blues riff.....

Drawing, not so much anymore....

But my accounting clients think I make the numbers sing and love me around April......

For a long time (about 4 years) I was only writing political essays, but now I'm writing fiction again.
I also dabble in photography. Mostly I do portraits for friends and friends of friends and occasionally help my dad with a wedding. If the happy couple wants some photojournalism I tag along. I don't do posed work. :P
I don't have much scanned right now. Here's two of my faves. My son a few years ago, and my husband and son when he was home on leave about a year and a half ago.

Nah, just kidding. I enjoy planting azaleas, sunflowers, peas and other things close together to form a miniature jungle. I've tried many different combinations to see what shapes I could sort of get out of it. I then prune the azaleas to sort of shape it up into something interesting.

Oh, yeah, also I play guitar every now and again. I used to play it every day, but my family gave me a hard time about it, so I sort of stuck them in the closet after 15 years of band after band with poor leadership and no direction. Right band comes along though, I may just tune 'em up and get my aching fingers back in shape. I think arthur is setting in or something.

I love it, I hate it, it drives me nearly insane. It's not a lot of fun, but I can't stop.

I also love to draw but any 2nd grader could to better than me. For a while I quit even trying. But my exwife, an artist, explained to me that it doesn't matter how good you are but how much you love doing it. So I still draw and it's still crap. But that's cool.

Photography. I find it endlessly frustrating. I can see what I want to capture on film in my head. Rarely happens. But that's really just a matter of working to improve my skills.

Khash.
