What I think I am going to do
I have thought it all over and this probably seems like the best course of action for now.

1) Call the Temp Agency on Monday to remind them that I am still looking for work.

2) Serve notice on my landlord that because of the mugging I am leaving the property. If things get ugly then they get ugly.

3) Find another apartment here in the Miami area that has security and parking.

4) Then save money for a move back to DC if the job market continues to suck here in Florida.

10. Hey, "Key Rat!"
I grew up in Coconut Grove in the 70's and that's what we called the Key Biscayne kids at Ponce de Leon Jr. High and Coral Gables Sr. High.

21. haven't heard that in a while...
:hi: back at ya!

Yes, yes...I left Miami in '93 after high school - Carrollton, actually, in the Grove - but the Key Rat tag was still going strong.

5. Sounds good Carlos
Remember it is usually safer to be in areas with lots of people. More eyes help ensures safety.

The best part of this is that you have a plan. You have disliked this apartment since day one. Time to move on. :bounce:

9. failing to plan is planning to fail..
sounds like a good idea. you may want to expand your acceptable job criteria though, if you're broke you will feel better even if it's doing a job that's less than glamorous. i know i worked some pretty embarassing jobs in college, but it was necessary.

go walk on the beach, i wish i still lived in delray..

12. Hey, my husband had just graduated from Harvard
with a Masters in City and Regional Planning. He worked as a Secretary for a year. It was all he could find. My family and friends were somewhat dismayed that I married him during this time. It all worked out eventually and life is much better now.

16. That could work out too
When my mother worked with the county commissioners office, the male secretary, who had a political science degree, became county administrator within a few years. I think that many companies are sexist in this way, promoting male secretaries with degrees whoile letting the women continue to be secretaries.

19. sounds like the same thing that happened
to me--wonder if it's the same company...doubt it though...it was 9 years ago for me. When my job fell through I went to a few hotels and resturants and applied for their waitstaff. I had received my last paycheck from my job at "home" so I was desperate. I didn't wait too long to pack it up and move back home. I have never looked back.

Good luck!

13. I am glad you are focusing on constructive action
Try to notice when your thoughts are constructive versus DESTRUCTIVE during this time. If you can at least recognize that, it is half the battle.

I wish you the best.

One more thing...avoid posting topics that will bring out snide responses such as the "Where can I get a gun" thread. The reason I say this is that you set yourself up for the ridiculous responses you get and that only makes things worse.

Also, go get involved with the Democratic party in Miami...there you will more likely find the connections you are looking for.

14. Do they have factories in Miami?
I don't know if that is a stupid question to ask. In the Midwest, you usually can get an entry level manufacturing job within a couple weeks if you apply everywhere, especially if you are willing to work off shifts. Since you are trying to save money to get away from Florida, this could be a good idea since these jobs usually make more money than entry level secretarial jobs. I do quality assurance work but I do work in a food factory. One summer, I worked in a plastics factory. It isn't that bad, especially if you know that you will get to leave (No offense intended to DUers who have worked most of their career in factories). You'll get to know more people too, which could perhaps even get you leads on other jobs.

18. Be sure to call the temp agencies every day
first thing in the morning.

In Minneapolis, they open as early as 6AM.

After a while, they give you jobs just to avoid having you call them.
