People... I'm turning 30 in about 2 months....need suggestions

I feel the need to mark the occassion.
My 20s decade was long and full of twists, turns and surprises. I think this next decade should prove interesting at worst and exciting at best.

What should I do to mark the occassion?
Any places that you've visited that you simply love and have to recommend?

Should I......
Take a trip?
Host a kegger?
Protest the war?

I won't make it a poll.... I'm curious to hear what people have done to mark significant or special events in their lives.

Do something that you will remember for the rest of your life. I love being in my 30s now. I feel so comfortable in my own skin.

I suggest a trip with a few close friends where you don't have to do anything but play all day. Bahamas.....

To get the vasectomy, I would have to get the surgery to first get the parts, then the follow-up surgery to get them removed. But, I'm a never say never kinda gal. :)

Seriously, I spent my twenties being really stupid, especially financially. I realized I was in over my head, and decided that I would shake the etch-a-sketch and start over, smarter. So far, 7 years into my 30s, I'm much smarter, and I'm a homeowner.

So, take stock of your life, figure out something you want to change, and start taking the steps to change it.

This does feel like a time to reevaluate, reassess and just generally figure out where I want to take the next ten years.
I'm liking the path I am on, thus far.

Owning a home would be nice, though. :)

10. My best birthday ever was my 40th

I took a solitary road trip with no destination in mind. The day before my actual birthday, I crossed from California into Arizona and realized I was in striking distance of the Grand Canyon which I'd never seen before. So I decided to head there. I reached the rim on the morning of my birthday. It was January so there were almost no other people there and it had snowed recently so it was absolutely spectacular.

It was just a terrific time - I would highly recommend something along those lines. It was a great introspective journey. Here's a pic I took of one of the trails -

I never thought, for one second, to cast aside plans and just go where the world takes me. That's so NOT been my life over the past 5 years that it would definitely be something that I've not tried in a loooong while.

29. My first thought was the amazing Southwest scenery for a journey

National parks like the Grand Canyon, Arches, Bryce, Zion, etc., etc., are sooooooo spectacular and awe-inspiring (yes, the cliche is true).

I turn 40 in the winter and I'm heading to New Orleans -- never been there.

I was there in November, so it wasn't hot. It was actually a bit chilly. But I had an amazing time.

Besides being the Mecca of classical music, it was also the capital of the Prussian empire. Unbelievable history, art, great subway system, restaurants, coffee, castles. Very European but Russian and Middle Eastern influence. Schonbrunn Palace is the Austrian Versailles. See the old classic film, "The Third Man" with Orson Welles and Joseph Cotton, filmed in Vienna, then go there and take the "Third Man" tour (visits locations used for the film).

When I went in '93 I had sort of a religious experience, which probably colors my impression of the city. I went to Beethoven's grave in the central cemetery, and I was the only one there. It was a sunny, windy day, and the grave was covered with leaves.

My mother bought me a journal for Christmas last year. I never used it, but the other day, I stumbled across it in a box. I thought it would be a fitting place to write something similar to what you have suggested.

of your best and closest friends; your TRUE ones; and spend an evening with them. Also, spend your own money for the evening. Rent yourself a limo, NICE dinner, etc. Appreciate the QUALITY in your life. 20's are usually about excesses and finding your limits. Its nice to enter your 30s knowing you are truly an adult and don't have to learn those particular lessons anymore.

I'm thinking that I might do something intimate with a few of the people I really love, and then maybe something a little bigger for acquaintainces. I have another friend that turned 30 in July, and we could have a little combo gathering for mutual pals.

How've ya been? Got that school stuff done yet?

For my 30 I went hiking on the Appalachian Trail. It was my first hike since the Boy Scouts. I thought I would do the whole thing (2000+ miles). I was a little naive. But I did do 600 miles of it, and it was a wonderful experience. Met lots of really great people and just tremendously enjoyed that simple existence for a couple of months. I've been back many times since. And hope to find time to go again someday.

Yeah, 30 seems to be the time for these rights of passage kind of things.

I've just been getting back into the swing of posting on the Lounge. I'm happy to say that I'm back :)

I've been keeping busy with a research fellowship that I was awarded over the summer. It's got me running all over the metro area. And I'm starting to think about PhD programs for the fall... I'm gearing up for the GRE. I've scheduled to take it a few days before my birthday. What was I thinking? :scared:

Hiking... now there's a thought. Me.. the trees... my thoughts. An invigorating experience.
