Van Halen or Van Hagar?

The answer should be obvious to any discerning music fan, <guitar solo> but alas, some still persist in their ignorance (hence the need for this discussion/poll) <guitar solo>. Van Halen was never really a coherent musical entity until Sammy Hagar joined the band (<guitar solo> ), they were mostly just a lot of annoying David Lee Roth preening with a lot of guitar solos <guitar solo>. It's indisputable <guitar solo> that, upon Hagar's arrival, a period of collaboration and unparalleled musical inspiration blossomed, and that the music from this period is far superior to anything from the David Lee Roth days. Discuss..<guitar solo>.

I do like many of the DLR tunes. In fact, my favorite Halen songs were done with DLR. However, the band seemed more like a Vegas Side show than a serious musical machine. With Hagar the horrible, they grew into themselves. It wasn't just noise and screaming, it was actual, coherent music. I may not have liked the songs as much as I did Panama, Hot for Teacher, Jump etc., but I like MORE of the songs.

Is that sarcastic enough?

I think I remember that in a rock 'n' roll magazine from way back when and it has stuck with me ever since.

Nothing Van Hagar did could compare to Runnin' with the Devil or VH's cover of You Really Got Me... VH with David Lee Roth was a band with charisma & personality. With Hagar, they were just another rock 'n' roll band.
