It won't prevent it from happening.
It will however minimize the impact if it does happen. There is a better chance of them catching it earlier.

It may take a little while to process a credit card under your SSN # if they applied for one.
Better to send each Credit Bureau a letter with a copy of the police report for your file. Otherwise, it could take years to straighten out.
