I didn't actually get to do much shopping...too bad! It was really hot, and I found that I really just wanted to get back to our ship and REST! So I didn't get to see the figurines you've described! It wouldn't have surprised me though, to see them...

25. Who is Ashcroft to criticise nudity?
As a law professor stated after he had the $8000 curtain placed in front of the statues of Liberty and Justice because of their bare breasts, 'It still doesn't matter what he does, whenever he takes the podium at the Attorney General's office, there will always be one giant boob out there for all to see.'

47. Well, the Greeks weren't hung up (excuse the expression) on endowment
back then the way we are today. Anyway, a small flaccid penis was used to distinguish art from pornography (Hey! Greek word there! Pornos - prostitution, graphos - writing; Pornography=written prostitution).

Greek pornography had, as you might imagine, penises of every size, shape, color and whatnot. Today, if we see a penis in a creative medium, we automatically think 'pornography'.

Okay, I think I revealed WAY too much about my knowledge of Greek art and porn. :hide::blush:

Okay, sorry for channelling a freeper, there. :-) ;-) B-)

I think the first statue is traditionally recognized as being one of Poseidon. But as I understand it, to save money, sculptors would often carve or cast a "generic" god figure, and then add an appropriate prop, like a trident for Poseidon or a lightning bolt for Zeus. Yes, even master Greek craftsmen would cut corners occasionally.

Great photos, Peg!

50. My dear Aristus...thank you for your enlightening comments!
And, BTW, I also appreciated your comments upthread about the origin of the word pornography...it makes a lot of sense...You helped my education there!

I love your freeper channelling, too!

And yes, I believe that the statue is Poseidon. The temple fragments further down are of a temple to him...it is amazing. I'm not sure if the gods had the same generic treatment that people did...but I am sure that the famous and not-so-famous did do as you describe. The generic body, with the individual head. Only the very wealthy or very famous would have a totally custom job in a statue. The craftsmen could work much more efficienly using this technique...

Glad you like the pics!

Edited on Wed Aug-03-05 08:40 PM by Old_Fart
Your welcome.

Some people believe that he is the statue of Zeus holding a thunderbolt and others believe that he was Poseidon and he is holding a trident. They found him in the sea around the northern tip of Artemisium.

I think that he is a splendid representative of the early classical period of greek sculpture.

I keep thinking that it had something to do with the The Peloponnesian League. I had it in my mind and now I can't think of what I was going to type about the legend.

Is that the statue of Marathon? I have always thought that it was of Alexander the Great as a boy.

The one picture of the Roman Amphitheater in your other message thread is fantastic. What tour did you take?

They have the most wonderful (and expensive, I might add) trips all over the world. This one was our third with them. Everything is first class...along with the prices...But well worth it. They always have at least one or more commonly two professors who are expert in what we see along for lectures. And then they also hire the very expert local guides for in-depth stuff...

We usually go every 2-3 years or so...gotta save up for these!

But I have had that historical feeling...My husband and I were wandering around in Frankfurt one day, and we just happened upon some Roman ruins...Not in any guide book, as far as we knew...in a little park, these ancient stones...I wanted to fall on my knees! 59. Crazy?
Edited on Thu Aug-04-05 12:07 AM by Old_Fart
I might be old but I am not crazy, at least I don't think so.

Where did your picture go of the Roman Arena? Did you know that they use to hold the olympics in the nude and people would oil their bodies up and have contests of who had the best looking body. They also had poetry and other areas were you didn't have to compete in the olympics. At one point they didn't allow women to join in which makes no sense to me because you see statues dating back to that era with nude women in the olympics so that might have been a different type of game. The greeks and romans also were bi-sexual or they had same sex life partners but history has left that part out and they should tell the truth in the books so that the kids can find out that its not something bad or something that didn't happen since the beginning of time.

I wish that we could tell the parts of history that has been hidden. The Christians have always tried to repress people. The crusades hold the truth about what they were really like and look at what they are doing now.

I can go on for days when it comes to history.

60. Yes, I was aware that the Olympics were held in the nude..didn't know
about the oiled bodies, but that doesn't surprise me one bit! I had thought women were banned from the games, though...I do believe it is known that the Greeks were bi-sexual; young men would pair up with the older ones...until they were married...I believe it was considered part of their education.

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that I thought you were crazy! I picked up on that word...and ran with it!

How do you think * is going to go down in history? I don't think that it will be hidden, somehow it will get out.

That is why I asked you about the code of Hammurabi. If we followed it now it wouldn't be a pretty sight when it comes to the * administration.

62. I firmly believe that * will go down in history as the worst person
to ever occupy the White House! I'm sure that all of this will get out...I always remember the quote from Martin Luther King: "The arc of history is long, but it bends towards justice."

I wondered why you asked me about the Code of Hammurabi...now I know. You are so right about how ugly things would be if we still followed it...especially for those fundies in the White House...and elsewhere in that administration...
