I watched "Vera Drake" tonight. All I can say is
that the Academy should have given every single god damned statuette they had to Imelda Staunton.

Holy fuck.

3. You can't even get mad at it as a statement for keeping abortion legal.
I mean, you literally can't, because it's set in 1950 England and it's just not fully analogous to 2005 USA.

But you can't get mad at it at all because the acting is just so good. The film doesn't even seem to have been made as a statement - I daresay it wasn't. It just tells you this story of a remarkable, loving woman.

You'll enjoy it. You'll cry, but you'll love it.

4. You bet.
I confess I had to leave the captions on until I got the cadences of their speech. But it was great.

Ever seen "Shirley Valentine?"

6. I loved that one too.
Tom Conti was good in that one. Hilarious and heartbreaking. I love it when movies are centered on ordinary people who do extraordinary things.

5. Yeah, I rented it back when it first came out.
Great movie and Imelda Staunton was amazing in the lead role.

Mike Leigh's movies are all very interesting character studies.
