Any Ronnie Montrose fans on DU?
I have the first Montrose album, and I burned "The Best of Gamma", and the Ronnie Montrose albums "The Speed of Sound" and "The Diva Station" from a friend and next door neighbor recently. Badass stuff. All of it.

Edgar Winter, Montrose, and Gamma. He's an amazing guitarist. I love his instrumental album "Open Fire."

6. You'd better friggin' BELIEVE it.
"Speed of Sound" was just re-released today on Wounded Bird Records. I remember Ronnie's track-by-track interview in "Guitar Player" upon its original release. The song "Zero G" is AMAZING...the kind of song that would easily find favor among the David Gilmour fan base. He said that on that song, the whammy bar was critical...and since he's using it to shape just about every note, his arm was pretty damned sore when he was done.

Best of Gamma is OK...before he released the single Gamma albums on CD, it was ESSENTIAL. Now I would recommend Gamma 1, Gamma 2, and the reunion album from a couple of years ago, Gamma 4. Gamma 3 relied too heavily on Mitchell Froom's production and keyboards.

I played "Voyager" in one of my old bands...it was quite a rush.

He's got an "official Web Site"...and he's apparently also gone the shaved head route, a la Joe Satriani:

ALSO...if you like Montrose and Gamma...Davey Pattison, Gamma's vocalist, has two albums with Michael Schenker, both exclusively featuring "Classic Rock" anthems like Voyager, Theme For An Imaginary Western, Long Misty Days and more...the killer track out of the whole batch is Free's "The Stealer."

7. I think the Wounded Bird reissue of Gamma 4
is either just out or coming out soon. Favorite Gamma song: "Razor King."

10. Gamma 4 is out, and has been for a while.
It was very, very good. I hated Gamma 3...Mitchell Froom also guided Richard Thompson's career for a few years, producing a string of spotty albums. Thankfully, that era is over.

Froom has the uncanny ability to work with artists that have a VERY strong identity. It's almost as if he isolates their strengths, everything they excel at, and KEEPS IT OUT OF THE PROJECT.

I like Razor King too, but my favorite Gamma moment...other than the solo in Voyager...is the opening guitar chords in "Fight To The Finish." THAT'S rock and roll.

9. a long ago ex roommate really loved him
especially the song "Mandolina" from his solo lp. Until he went to see him in concert that is..."Man I couldn't believe it, it was just a stupid hard rock band and on the song Mandolina he just played it on his stupid guitar! There wasn't any mandolin at all!"

That was my long ago ex roommate. Me, I have Montrose and Paper Money, every once in awhile like to listen to some good 70s rock.

11. He covered Gene Pitney rather well.
I'm talking about 'Town Without Pity.'

But technically, I think it was Bacharach.
