Stung 6 Times Last Night by Yellow Jackets!
OMG! they came swarming up from a nest by some flowers that i was watering! i tried swatting them and running away and i was screaming and tried to run in the house but a couple got in and were on me. i pulled two stingers out, didn't have baking soda (so i couldn't bake them a fucking cake--just kidding)but i iced them and took four advil.

i was icing them for six hours, took four more advil.

damn! that hurt!

tomorrow the yellow jacket professional killers will come and hopefully rid me and my backyard of the nest. i'm afraid to let my dog out! i saw a bunny sitting near the nest eating grass tonight and i was afraid the bunny would get hurt!

let this be a lesson to all of you: yellow jackets hate to be watered!

2. Pretty good chance you stepped on the nest while watering.
Thats usually what gets them riled up and stinging. Otherwise a thunderstorm would set them off.

However, I and bees/hornets/wasps seem to be nuetral towards each other. I know some people stinging things seem to outright hate. They literally get stung while I stand there untouched. It's bizarre.

3. lucky you (i guess). wish they were feeling neutral toward me.
i know i didn't step on the nest--i was watering it because i was trying to water these tall flowers and i wanted to get the water at the roots--so i was aiming the hose near the dirt when all of a sudden they all came up out of the dirt--it was like a stupid horror movie

5. Underground nest probably.
I hate the underground nests because you don't find them until you step on or near them, or trip on a log, or water plants. If you do anything about them, do it at night since they have much less tendency to come out them.

6. Lucky you...
that those wern't Japanese Giant Hornets (Vespa mandarinia). They average 2 inches in length and have been known to kill cows that step on their undeground nests. It only takes a few stings to kill a human. Here's a picture of the brute:

This one is just over 2 inches so about life sized, abliet a lil larger.

stung 12 times on the mouth and back as a child by a nest of red wasps. Tobacco also helps to get the poison out. I know the pain! Ouch!

13. I used to mow my lawn in a light t-shirt
however, after getting stung by a wasp once, I started mowing my lawn in a heavy sweatshirt all the time & nice thick pants, too... didn't matter if it was 95 & humid outside.

now, I pay somebody to mow my lawn.

11. Yeeeeoow. Yellow jackets are painful!
I had a plain ole wasp sting me last month - took my leg three weeks to heal.

(gin and tonics with advil work well too).

12. Next year, put up traps
The Rescue brand traps are simple and effective if you put them up in late spring before you see the first yellowjacket. The bait attracts the scouts before the nest is established. We haven't had a problem since we started using one.

We had a nest in one of our barrel planters and discovered it the same way you did --- I concur, yellowjackets hate to be watered.
