I'm not making this about me. I have received numerous PMs from people telling me stories of suicides in their families. More people here than anyone can imagine have been through this tragedy.

We don't post "joke threads" about cancer (although I wouldn't be surprised if that, too, eventually happens) so why is suicide considered laugh material?

DU ought to have a standing policy that if someone makes a threat like that, even joking, admin will call police in the town in which that DUer is located, and report the threat.

Nor is any type of insensitivity. At least to me. As far as mods and admin are concerned, when a thread about suicide is posted, we DO take it seriously. We lock the thread and advise the person to seek professional help. Unfortunately, because this is an anonymous message board, it isn't always possible to try to track people down IRL.

Suicide isn't a laughing matter at all. I can't imagine the despair going on in the mind of someone contemplating suicide. There are ways out of whatever problem is going on in their lives. But they themselves cannot see this. I wish there was a way to prevent something like this.

So do I. I can't imagine living in the torment in which one would consider taking one's life. Well, I can--but only because I have a very close family member who's contemplated it. And I've lost an uncle to it, and a father-in-law.

It's so horrible for the people left behind. It's a shame that they have to deal with their sadness, guilt, anger, as well as with the stigma some people assign to suicide victims and their families.
